Got an early flight out of Frankfurt am Main?

Arriving in Frankfurt after a long flight and want to explore the city before continuing to your next destination?

Don’t want to miss your expensive train reservation due to an unexpected flight delay or drive your rental car while jet-lagged?

Consider spending the night in a hotel right near Frankfurt International Airport!

Frankfurt skyline

Frankfurt is a relatively compact city that’s well-connected to Frankfurt International Airport via public transportation. By staying near the airport for a night or two, you can easily head to downtown Frankfurt and see all the famous landmarks like the Frankfurt Cathedral, Goethe House, or the Main River without worrying about missing your flight, train or rental car pick-up the next morning.

With Frankfurt Airport being one of the most important airports in the world, it’s no surprise that there are a variety of accommodations in its proximity. From luxury hotels, business hotels, and budget-friendly options, you’ll find the perfect place to lay your head in our list of the best hotels near Frankfurt Airport.

Why Stay Near Frankfurt International Airport (FRA)?

Staying near the Frankfurt Airport is ideal for those who only need to spend one or two nights and want to be close to both the city and the airport. You’ll have the comfort of knowing you’re conveniently close to the airport, but you’ll also be able to easily head into the city if you’d like.

It’s a no-brainer to stay near the airport if your flight arrives in Frankfurt late at night. Instead of trying to figure out how to get into the city and walking around a new city in the dark with your luggage, you can simply head to a hotel close to airport for much needed rest.

Staying near the airport is also a great location if you have an early flight to catch the next morning. You can spend the day or just an evening in Frankfurt city center, return to your hotel for a good night’s sleep, and then make your way to your morning flight refreshed, relaxed, and stress-free.

Choosing a hotel near Frankfurt airport is also a great option if your international flight arrives in Germany in the morning or during the day. You’re likely to be exhausted from travel and jet-lagged from changing so many time zones. And then there’s always the concern that you’ll miss the expensive train, bus or car rental pick-up time you booked if your flight is unexpectedly delayed (it’s happened to us and it’s frustrating).

So why not make things easy on yourself and spend your first night near Frankfurt airport!

That way, if your flight is on time, you can drop your luggage at the hotel and head into the city to see the sights and enjoy good food.

If your flight is delayed, you won’t miss an important train, bus or rental car pick-up and lose time and money.

And no matter what, you’ll get a good night sleep and start your trip on the right foot.

How Far Is Frankfurt Airport from the City?

The distance between the and Frankfurt city center is 13 km or approximately 8 miles. It’s around a 15-minute drive by car or 20 to 30 minutes depending on what public transportation you take.

I’ve gone to and from Frankfurt airport and city many times and it’s quick and easy – quicker and easier than in many other cities!

How Can I Get to Frankfurt City from the Airport?

There are a couple ways of getting to central Frankfurt from the airport using public transportation. But you can also take a taxi or book a car rental if you prefer.

By Bus

There are several bus lines which can take you to the center: 61, 77, 72, 58 and 62 bus lines (daytime buses) and 81 and 7 bus lines (night buses).

By Train

S-Bahn (regional trains): Take the S-Bahn railway S6 and S9 lines to Offenbach Ost and Hanau. Then you’ll be able to transfer to downtown Frankfurt (Hauptwache Station).

U-Bahn (metro): You can take U-Bahn 8 and 9 lines, which will take you to Hauptwache Station.

What To Consider When Staying Near Frankfurt Airport

  1. Location. When choosing an airport hotel near Frankfurt International Airport, you have plenty of options. There are several hotels that are directly connected to a terminal building via a walkway, meaning you won’t have to leave the hotel to go to the airport. There’s even a hotel that’s inside the transit area of the airport! If you don’t mind being a short distance from the airport, you’ll find hotels within the vicinity of the airport that’s easily reachable by walking or a taxi.
  2. Airport shuttle services. If you don’t want to worry about public transportation or booking a taxi, airport shuttle services solve this problem. Most airport hotels that are not directly connected to the airport and are a few minutes away offer airport shuttles. Many might have an additional service fee but you can definitely find many that are free for guests to use. Make sure to ask and check the schedule, how frequent they run, and if they operate 24/7.
  3. Rooms with A/C. Summers in Germany can at times be hot and humid. Not all hotels in Germany have A/C, so if this is important to you, be sure to specifically look for it before booking. If you’re not traveling in the height of summer, not having A/C isn’t usually an issue. Note: if you don’t have A/C in your hotel, you’ll likely be able to open the windows, but it may be noisy since you are near the airport.
  4. Breakfast. Most hotels offer free or paid breakfast (sometimes whether or not you get a free breakfast depends on the type of room you book). Many hotels offer a full German breakfast buffet, while others are simpler (bread, Brötchen, cold cuts, jam, coffee, tea). American chain hotels may offer an American-style breakfast (eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc.).
  5. Free Wi-Fi. Most hotels will offer free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel but it’s a good idea to check on that if having free Wi-Fi is important to you.
  6. Amenities. Hotels may offer facilities such as a gym, sauna, indoor pool, on-site restaurants and bars, or services like valet parking, a concierge or laundry service. Some even offer babysitting services! Many hotels offer the option to pay at the hotel and fully refundable rooms – sometimes at a slightly higher price than pre-pay or non-refundable rooms.

Where Is Frankfurt Am Main?

Frankfurt am Main is a central German city on the river Main located in the state of Hesse. It’s the biggest city nearest Frankfurt International Airport.

Are There 2 Frankfurts in Germany?

Yes! There are 2 Frankfurts: Frankfurt am Main and Frankfurt an der Oder. They are differentiated by the river they’re on.

The official name of the Frankfurt near the big international airport is “Frankfurt am Main.” “Main” is the name of the river that flows through the city, so Frankfurt am Main means Frankfurt on the Main river.

So “Frankfurt an der Oder” means Frankfurt on the Oder river and is located in Eastern Germany.

Is Frankfurt Worth Visiting?

Yes, it certainly can be! If you’re transiting through Frankfurt, staying in the city for a full day or even half a day is worth it to see some of the city’s famous tourist destinations! The city is pretty compact so you can see a lot just using public transport.

Just within the Old Town area, you’ll be able to see Römerberg, the central main square with the famous town hall Römer. Other important landmarks like the Frankfurt Cathedral, St. Paul’s Church, and Goethe House are within walking distance. Check out our guide on how to plan the ultimate 1 day itinerary in Frankfurt here.

After years of simply transiting through Frankfurt and only spending a day or two in the city I decided to spend several days there a few years ago while in Europe to work with a client.

I rented an apartment in a neighborhood outside of the city center and got to know this city by simply exploring by foot and public transport. It’s a beautiful city and I really enjoyed my time getting to know Frankfurt as a temporary local!

Should I Stay In Frankfurt Or Near The Airport?

Both are good options. It all depends on your itinerary and duration of your stay.

If you are only staying in Frankfurt overnight and have a very early morning flight the next day, then we suggest booking a hotel near the airport for convenience. That way you’ll be able to save time and go sightseeing without the worries of waking up extra early, getting to the airport, or missing your flight. Check out our guide of the best hotels near Frankfurt airport here.

If you aren’t constrained by time or are traveling by train, then staying in the city center near the central train station and downtown is the best choice. You have plenty of hotels to choose from that are within walking distance of all the city’s top landmarks.

What To Look For In A Hotel

  1. Central location in the Old Town area. The Old Town area is a great location because it’s home to the city’s most important landmarks like Römerberg, the town hall Römer, Frankfurt Cathedral, Goethe House, Paulskirche, and many more.
  2. Number and size of beds. You’re likely to have the option to book a variety of bed types – e.g., king (which might be 1 mattress or 2 twins on one king-sized frame – often with 2 duvets), a queen, or 1 or more twins. Sometimes a single room will have a queen or a twin. Not all of these will be available at every hotel, though, so be sure to check what type of beds they offer.
  3. Rooms with en suite full baths. Most hotels offer full en suite bathrooms, some with a bathtub, some with a bathtub and shower combo, others will just have a shower. Some hotels in Germany – usually smaller boutique hotels or budget hotels – will offer rooms with a shared hall bathroom. The hotels in this list have full en suite bathrooms.
  4. Rooms with A/C. Summers in Germany can at times be hot and humid. Not all hotels in Germany have A/C, so if this is important to you, be sure to specifically look for it before booking. Note: if you don’t have A/C in your hotel, you’ll likely be able to open the windows (though you’re not likely to have a screened-in window).
  5. Breakfast. Most hotels offer free or paid breakfast (sometimes whether or not you get a free breakfast depends on the type of room you book). Many hotels offer a full German breakfast buffet, while others are simpler (bread, Brötchen, cold cuts, jam, coffee, tea). American chain hotels may offer an American-style breakfast (eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc).
  6. An elevator. While you’re likely to find an elevator in large, modern hotels with high floors, stairs might be the only option at older, boutique or smaller hotels. If you don’t mind carrying your luggage up a few flights of stairs, these non-elevator hotels are often quite charming. But if an elevator is important to you, look for larger, modern, or chain hotels.
  7. Parking. Some city center hotels will offer on-site parking for a daily fee. If there’s no on-site parking, you can likely find a nearby public parking area or on-street parking.
  8. Free wifi. Most hotels will offer free wifi throughout the hotel but it’s a good idea to check on that if having free wifi is important to you.
  10. Good value. Staying in a popular part of the city will typically cost more than staying further out but you’ll be able to easily walk to many sites and you’ll be close to public transportation. So you’ll not only have more flexibility during the day, you’ll also save time and stress by not having to “commute” to the city center each day.

As one of the busiest airports in the world, tons of people pass through and spend time at FRA for lots of different reasons.

You might be coming from the United States and have a long layover before catching your connecting flight to another city in Germany.

Perhaps you have a short layover before your next flight to another European destination.

Or maybe you have to wait a few hours to pick up your rental car or catch a train to another destination in Germany or elsewhere in Europe.

No matter the reason or the amount of time you have, there’s no need to be bored!

Whether you stay in the airport or venture outside to the city center, here are the best things to do during your Frankfurt Airport layover.

10 Things to Do at Frankfurt Airport on a Layover

As the busiest airport in Germany, Frankfurt Airport has plenty of activities to keep travelers occupied during their 2 or 3 hour layover.

If you’d prefer to venture into downtown Frankfurt am Main, scroll down for directions and our sight-seeing tips.

1. Unwind In An Airport Lounge

A great way to unwind after long international flights is by relaxing at one of the lounges in the airport. If you fly business class or first class, you’ll automatically have lounge access to your airline’s exclusive lounge. These include Lufthansa, Air Canada, Air France KLM, Emirates, Japan Airlines, and more.

Alternatively, you can also book a stay at the Frankfurt Airport VIP-Services airport lounge. It’s available for any traveler as long as you book in advance. Take relaxation to a whole other level at a fully equipped conference room or a luxurious private suite, complete with a chauffeur in a luxury limousine directly to your aircraft.

There are also several walk-in lounges that offer day tickets at more affordable rates, giving you access to buffet meals, unlimited high-speed free wifi, fully serviced bars, comfortable seating, and even showers. For more information on the different airport lounges, visit the airport’s official website.

We get a couple free lounge access tickets each year through one of our business credit cards, so check yours to see if that’s an option.

2. Take An Airport Tour

This tour is a fun way to learn interesting facts and see different parts of the airport you wouldn’t otherwise see. There are two tours offered: XXL Tour (2-hour tour) and Starter Tour (45 minutes). All tours are done from the comfort of an air-conditioned bus.

The XXL Tour is the ultimate airport experience. You can see the ground handling of aircraft, takeoffs and landings in the central runways, and new development sites. The Starter Tour allows you to see the highlights, like a quick glance at aircrafts being fueled and closeups of aircraft livery from all over the world. Book tickets here!

3. Admire The Views From The Visitors’ Terrace Or Open Air Deck

Get some much needed fresh air at the Visitors’ Terrace and the Open Air Deck! The Visitors’ Terrace located in Terminal 2 is a great place to get a closer view of the apron and planes landing and taking off on the runways.

The Open Air Deck is a roof terrace located in the transit area. Here you can take a smoke break, sit among the greenery under the sun, or watch airplanes. There’s even a telescope you can use for close ups, at no extra cost.

4. Go On A Shopping Spree

Frankfurt Airport has stores and shopping areas scattered in all terminals. The Airport City Mall, located pre-security in Terminal 1 features a wide range of retail outlets and restaurants. In Terminal 2, you’ll find all the airport staples like convenience stores, Duty Free, and famous designer brands.

You can even book a personal shopper to advise you on the best products or help you look for something specific. The personal shoppers speak Mandarin, Vietnamese, German and English fluently and the service is free of charge.

Even if you’re not in the mood to make purchases, it’s always interesting to see what’s available in other countries, isn’t it?

5. Experience A Flight Simulator

Traveling with children and looking for a fun activity to keep them entertained? Check out the flight simulator center!

Experience what flying is like from the perspective of a pilot and practice taking off and landing at different international airports. Choose from different simulations (there’s even one for younger kids), all under the guidance of an expert professional pilot!

6. Catch A Movie At Movie World

Another great way to pass time quickly is by watching movies. At Movie World, you can watch movies on a big screen for free! These small, private areas have TVs where you can choose from blockbusters, full-length movies, documentaries, and television series. There’s a wide selection to choose from, suitable for families and available in different languages.

7. Enjoy Delicious Meals, Drinks And Snacks

You definitely won’t go hungry with all the choices of restaurants available! The airport offers a wide range of options, from fast food chains, German local food, coffee shops and bakeries, Asian food, Italian food, and healthy options.

There are some establishments that are open 24/7 during the summer months such as McDonald’s, and other German chains like Bistrot, Scoom that serve everything from pastries, Schnitzel, sandwiches, and salads. Check the full list of dining options here.

8. Meditate, Stretch And Relax

After a long day of traveling, nothing helps like some peace and quiet. There are multiple spaces in FRA that allow you to have some time to yourself amidst the noise and bustle of the airport. You’ll find free-of-charge yoga rooms in both terminals, fully equipped with mirror walls, yoga mats, and a monitor showing short videos.

If you’re religious, there are Christian chapels, Jewish prayer rooms, and Muslim prayer rooms in both terminals as well. For those who are not religious, you can visit the quiet rooms. These rooms are entirely neutral and don’t have any specific cultural or religious features. They’re an excellent place to enjoy a few moments of contemplation and de-stress.

9. Freshen Up After A Long Flight

If you need to freshen up before traveling to your final destination, take advantage of the shower facilities available in the airport. The showers are open for use between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm. There is a small cost of 6,00€ to use them but this includes a towel, toiletries, and use of a hair dryer. Check the locations of the showers here.

10. Take A Comfortable Nap

Struggling with jet lag and want a comfortable place to sleep for a while? Book a spot at the NapCabs in Terminal 1! The NapCabs are small soundproof cabins with a comfortable bed, adjustable air-conditioning, alarm clock, USB charging station, free wi-fi, and even a work desk. Cabins are booked per hour with a minimum of 2 to 3 hours, depending on the time and must be reserved in advance online.

How To Leave Frankfurt Airport And Explore the City Center

If you have 7 to 8 hours or more available, then we definitely suggest venturing out of the airport and heading into the city to do some sightseeing. You’ll be surprised at how much you can see and fit into your schedule!

One of the most efficient ways to go about exploring Frankfurt is to start in Old Town, the heart of Frankfurt.

It’s home to important landmarks like Römerberg, the central main square, and Frankfurt’s City Hall. From here you can easily make your way to the Frankfurt Cathedral, cross the Iron Bridge, and stroll along the River Main.

There’s more to the city but these are the highlights to see when you don’t have much time.

For a full list of popular spots and main attractions to see, read our 1 day in Frankfurt itinerary guide.

Need to Spend The Night at Frankfurt Airport or Frankfurt City?

If you have a long stay at the airport, and especially if you need to stay overnight, we suggest booking a hotel near the airport.

It’ll be much more comfortable to relax in a hotel room before catching your next flight or train ride and it also allows you to explore Frankfurt city center without worrying about making it back by a specific time.

There’s a hotel located directly inside the airport called MY CLOUD Transit Hotel. This is a good option for those who either don’t have enough time or the desire to go out and explore the city of Frankfurt but would still like to have the privacy of their own room to relax.

The compact rooms have queen-sized beds, modern bathrooms, air-conditioning, flat screen TVs, and some even have views of the runway. Click here to book a room in this Frankfurt Airport Hotel.

If you want to stay outside of the airport, you’ll find plenty of options in the surrounding area.  Many have direct access to the airport via walkways, while many others are just a 5- to 10-minute walk away.

Here are some of our top suggestions:

  1. Hilton Garden Inn – World class hotel chain with direct access to Terminal 1 by skywalk
  2. Holiday Inn Frankfurt Airport – Great value hotel located 10 minutes away from Terminal 2
  3. Steigenberger Airport Hotel Frankfurt – Business hotel with modern amenities and complimentary 24-hour airport shuttle

If you’re looking for the best German castles to visit in the Frankfurt area (and beyond!), this guide gives you everything you need to know to plan the perfect castle visit.

Cochum castle

Known as Germany’s bustling financial capital, Frankfurt isn’t exactly the first city that comes to mind when you think of the best German castles. The city conjures up images of tall skyscrapers, busy streets, and urban architecture.

But you’ll be surprised to find out that just on the outskirts of this modern city, fascinating castles await you. From Gothic castles, medieval forts, private residences and even a castle turned youth hostel, there’s no shortage of interesting castles waiting to be discovered outside of Frankfurt.

In this guide, we share a list of the best castles near Frankfurt (perfect for day trips!) and practical information on what to do and how to get to each castle. It’s a great starting point to explore not only Frankfurt but all the other castles that Germany has to offer! At the end of the guide we share tips for visiting Frankfurt.

Cochem castle

Can I Take a Day Trip To These Castles from Frankfurt?

Yes! In fact, these castles make for the perfect day trip from Frankfurt because of their proximity to the city. So you can easily add day one or more day trips to your itinerary. The best castle for a quick and easy day trip would be Saalburg Roman Fort since it’s just a 30-minute drive away from Frankfurt.

Most of the other castles are over an hour drive away which are great if you have more free time in your itinerary. You can also look into guided tours that take care of transportation and logistics to make your day trip hassle-free, like this guided day trip from Frankfurt to Eltz Castle.

Can I Sleep in a Castle Near Frankfurt?

Though many of us would love to experience sleeping like royals in a castle, it’s not as common of an option as you may imagine. Many of these castles serve as museums or exhibits that showcase the castles’ rich history and background. Some of them are also still under the ownership of the founding families so they’re used as summer residences or private estates.

Because of this, sleeping in a castle is not really an option that’s easily available — with some rare exceptions. For example, the castle in Bacharach has been turned into a youth hostel! If you book well in advance, you can have the unique experience of sleeping in a German castle. Yes, it’s a youth hostel but hostels in Germany tend to be pretty nice (albeit basic) and family oriented.

The castle in Bacharach is on a hill overlooking the village of Bacharach below and has AMAZING views of the river Rhine below. You can drive up the hill to hostel entrance or hike up from the town (and train station) below. Even if you don’t stay there I highly recommend hiking up to the castle for the view (it is a hike up a hill but it’s pretty short).

Bacharach Castle / Youth Hostel
Can you believe this is a youth hostel?!

Other castles in the area have hotels not inside the castle itself, but very close by. You can stay in one of their tastefully designed rooms and get spectacular views of the castle and surrounding landscape.

If you’re really seeking unique, fun experiences in castles besides guided tours, then we suggest looking into special tours or events that each castle hosts. Many host medieval dinners and feasts or festive markets during Christmas season.

How to Get to the Castles Near Frankfurt

If you’ll be in the Frankfurt area and want to venture out beyond the city, you can take your pick from several castles!

The best and fastest way to get to these castles near Frankfurt is by car. The drives to most of these castles are just a little over an hour. Many official websites have helpful directions on what routes to take. So if you’re picking up or dropping off a rental car in Frankfurt, why not include one or more of the castles below on your itinerary?

That said, you can get pretty much anywhere in Germany via public transportation. Some of the castles give directions for public transportation though you might have to transfer from train to bus.

It holds great significance in German history. First of all, it’s the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Holy Bible into German. And last but not least, it’s also one of the first of many German castles to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Castle Stahleck in Bacharach

8. Castle Stahleck in Bacharach

Castle Stahleck is located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, around an hour drive away from Frankfurt. This beautiful castle stands on a crag above sea level with a view of the Lorelei valley. It’s also surrounded by a water-filled partial moat, which is a unique architectural feature for castles in Germany.

It has a rich history, dating back to the 12th century though the exact year remains unknown. In the 17th century, it was destroyed during the Thirty Years War. It was only in the early 20th century when it was rebuilt to be a youth hostel.

Currently, the Bacharach Youth Hostel is a world-famous accommodation that’s almost always fully booked. There are over 160 rooms accommodating different numbers of beds. There’s a dining room, bistro, cafe/bar, multiple common rooms, and even a Knights’ Hall that can be used for events for over 100 people.

Because the castle is used as a hostel, it’s not available for tours. But, the public can enjoy free entry to the courtyard where they can enjoy views of the Rhine River.

Even if you don’t stay at the castle youth hostel, you can hike up the hill for the amazing views! It’s worth hike, both to see the castle (last time I was there you could go inside the common areas, even if you’re not staying there) and the views.

Frankfurt

Where is Frankfurt?

Located in the German state of Hesse (Hessen in German), in the western part of the country on the banks of the River Main, Frankfurt am Main is one of the most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities in Germany. The city is also the heart of the larger Rhine-Main metropolitan region.

Frankfurt is a global city and one of the major financial centers of Europe. Because of this, this city is a hub for many worldwide and European corporate headquarters. It’s also home to some of the most renowned cultural institutions like the Alte Oper and the Museum Embankment (Museumsufer).

For many travelers, Frankfurt is widely known as the gateway to Germany or even continental Europe. This is in large part due to the Frankfurt Airport, the busiest airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world. It is the airport with the most direct routes in the world and is also the main hub for Lufthansa, the national airline of Germany.

If you’re flying in or out of Frankfurt, why not take a day or two to see the city and a castle or two?

Frankfurt Old Town

Where to Stay in Frankfurt

If you’d like to visit castles in the Frankfurt area, here are 3 easy options for where to sleep: Frankfurt city, near the Frankfurt airport, and Wiesbaden.

There are many different areas you can stay in when visiting Frankfurt. Choosing an area can depend on various things like how long you’re staying or why you plan to visit the city. You can also find all sorts of accommodation options for everyone. Depending on your budget or travel style, you might like Frankfurt’s boutique hotels, international chains, small family-run hotels or even youth hostels.

For those who are in Frankfurt on a long layover or are just stopping by on your way to another city, staying near the airport is probably be the most convenient option. That way you can get to and from the hotel and airport quickly and easily. Because Frankfurt Airport is so busy, finding a hotel that fits your budget or style shouldn’t be a problem.

And even though you’re close to the airport, it’s super easy to go into Frankfurt city! From the airport to Frankfurt’s Hauptbahnhof (main train station) it’s roughly a 15-minute ride via S-bahn (metro). Click here to see popular hotels near the Frankfurt airport!

Frankfurt city

If you want to be near all the historical landmarks and top sights, then downtown is the best area to stay in. Its central location and walkability is hard to beat. It’s also a very well connected area because of all the metro stops and how close the Hauptbahnhof is. However, since it is a very touristy area, rates might be higher especially during peak travel seasons like the months of summer or close to Christmas. Click here to see top hotels in downtown Frankfurt.

Another great option is Wiesbaden. Wiesbaden is a nice, smaller town that’s located near the airport. If you are looking for the convenience of being near Frankfurt Airport but want to stay somewhere more unique and has a picturesque downtown (with a 15 foot tall cuckoo clock!), then we recommend looking into Wiesbaden. Click here to check out the best hotels in Wiesbaden.

I’ve stayed in a hotel in downtown Frankfurt (close to everything and minutes from the airport), an AirBnB in a neighborhood outside of the city center (quieter but still easy to get around), and in a hotel in downtown Wiesbaden (peaceful, relaxing, and closer to a few of the castles in the list below). All were easy to reach from the airport and wonderful places to spend a few days right after arriving or just before departing Frankfurt.

Only got 1 day in Frankfurt? Here’s how to plan the ultimate 1 day itinerary.

Frankfurt, Germany

Although Frankfurt is mostly known for being the country’s main airport hub and a financial center for business trips, rather than a tourist destination, the lively city of Frankfurt is the gateway to Germany and an ideal place for easy travel connections and convenient day trips.

Frankfurt is the very first city I visited when I moved to Germany (well, I saw the airport and the train station!) but I didn’t return to actually explore the city for several years. I’d always thought of it as kinda blah but I wish I’d visited sooner because it’s a wonderful city!

Whether or not Frankfurt am Main is at the top of your list of German cities to explore, it’s worth considering a visit to one of Germany’s major cities.

So if you ever find yourself in Frankfurt on a long layover or if you have an extra day or two before or after a flight, get ready to explore, because the city might just take you by surprise.

Keep reading to learn about the best places to visit in Frankfurt, Germany and how to plan the ultimate 1 day itinerary.

Old Town, Frankfurt am Main

When to Visit Frankfurt

Summer is the most popular time to visit Germany in general and Frankfurt is no exception. Warm temperatures and long sunny days are perfect for vacation but they do attract tons of tourists, which translates to higher prices for airfare and accommodations. Air conditioning isn’t common anywhere in Germany but you’ll probably be spending most of your time outdoors by the river or in beer gardens in the summer months.

The changing of the leaves during the fall months bring cooler temperatures and golden views of the city. Prices begin to drop and crowds also begin to thin out. The weather in the fall is still pleasant enough for you to enjoy walking around the city.

The winter season is a great option if you want to celebrate the holidays by exploring the Christmas markets. But be prepared to brave freezing temperatures and rainy or even snowy days. An upside is that prices are usually at their lowest, especially after the holidays. And even though many people visit the Christmas markets, it doesn’t feel as “touristy” as it can in the summer.

The bad weather slowly starts to disappear once springtime arrives. Locals are happy to step out with just a light jacket and spend time outdoors as the gardens start blooming. One of the best times to visit would be in early spring, just before the summer peak.

Frankfurt or Frankfurt Am Main?

You’ve probably seen the city referred to both ways. While most people simply call it Frankfurt, the city’s official name is Frankfurt am Main, meaning Frankfurt on Main. “Main” is the name of the river that flows through Frankfurt, so Frankfurt am Main means Frankfurt on the Main river.

The reason “am Main” is added to Frankfurt is because there’s another Frankfurt in Germany – Frankfurt an der Oder. Yep, that means Frankfurt on the Oder river. That Frankfurt is in eastern Germany, a couple hours away from Berlin on the Polish border.

Frankfurt am Main is much larger than Frankfurt an der Oder, so if you simply say Frankfurt, most everyone will know which one you mean.

Frankfurt Airport

How to Get to Frankfurt

Home to Germany’s main airport and one of the busiest central train stations in Germany, Frankfurt is va well-connected and easy destination to reach.

Wherever you may be traveling from, it’s easy to find a good connecting flight to Frankfurt International Airport.

Getting from Frankfurt Airport to the main train station is a quick 15-minute ride via S-bahn. Getting to the city center is also just as easy and quick via public transportation. You can get off at the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and walk or ride to a specific stop downtown.

Another great way to travel to Frankfurt is by train, especially if you’re coming from within Germany or other European cities in neighboring countries.

Visiting Frankfurt Upon Arriving in Germany

If you’re flying into Frankfurt overnight from the US and want to catch a train to your final destination, but are worried about missing your train – and losing the money you paid for your ticket – due to a potential flight delay, plan a 1 day visit to Frankfurt!

Take public transportation from the airport to Frankfurt’s main train station (Hauptbahnhof), store your luggage, and then explore the city until shortly before your train departs.

Walking around the city will stave off jet lag, you won’t lose money by missing your train and forfeiting your ticket, and you’ll explore a lovely new city.

The Best Way to Get Around Frankfurt

Although Frankfurt spreads out in all directions, the inner city is pretty compact. On your visit, you’ll likely spend the majority of your time in the downtown or old town (Altstadt) area. You can easily reach historic Frankfurt and get to all sights in this area by walking from the train station.

For places that are a bit farther away, you can make use of the city’s public transportation which includes the U-bahn, S-bahn, trams, and buses.

If you’re only in the city for a day, going through the trouble of learning the transportation network might not be worth your time. In this case we suggest taking the Hop On Hop Off Bus tour since the bus routes bring you to all the best tourist attractions. For more information, head to the section on our recommended guided tours.

Frankfurt Card – Yes or No?

The Frankfurt Card offers you free unlimited travel on all public transport within the city of Frankfurt and Frankfurt International Airport (Zone 50 and Zone 5090). Not only that, it comes with up to 50% discount on select city tours, museums, restaurants, and other attractions.

The card is available for either one day (€ 11.50) or two days (€ 17.00). You can also choose between individual tickets or group tickets (3 to 5 persons). It’s a great deal but the question is – is it worth it for a 1-day trip?

If you’re mostly sightseeing in the downtown area, you might not get a lot of use out of it since you’ll be doing a lot of walking. But since it also includes transportation to and from the airport plus discounts on tourist spots, it’s worth looking into and deciding based on your itinerary.

All in all, we recommend buying your Frankfurt Card if you’re in the city for at least a day and a half to really make the most out of it. It’s especially worth it if you’re traveling as a group, since you can split the amount and avoid the extra cost of having to buy single tickets for every ride.

There’s no better place to start your Frankfurt itinerary than Old Town. It’s home to some of the city’s most important landmarks like Römerberg, the central main square. In the middle of the square amidst all the restored medieval houses, you’ll also find the Fountain of Justice around which the Christmas Market is set up each year.

Frankfurt’s City Hall (Rathaus)

One of the most important medieval buildings in the historic old town is Römer, the city’s town hall since the 15th century. The three-story building complex with its three-gabled roof and consisting of nine houses makes up for one of Frankfurt’s most iconic façades.

Downtown Frankfurt

Frankfurt Cathedral (Frankfurter Dom)

A short walk away from the town hall, you’ll find the Frankfurt Cathedral, an impressive religious building with historical significance. This is also where coronation of emperors was hosted during the Holy Roman Empire. Visitors can also climb up the Gothic-style church’s tower and enjoy great views of Old Town.

Goethe House (Goethes Wohnhaus)

Take 5-minute walk from St. Paul’s Church to arrive at the birthplace of famous German author and poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Goethe lived here until the age of 16 and the preserved interior gives you glimpse into his youth. Next to the house, you’ll also find the Goethe Museum dedicated to his literary work.

St. Paul’s Church (Paulskirche)

Located opposite the town hall, St. Paul’s Church is an important symbol of German democracy. It was the seat of first German assembly in 1848 and in turn provided the basis for the German constitution. Now it’s a venue used for cultural events and award presentations.

River Main Frankfurt

River Cruise on the River Main

Next, make your way down south to the Main river running through the heart of Frankfurt. If you want to take a break from sightseeing through busy streets, one of the best things you can do is stroll along the river banks and take in the city’s skyline.

To get an even better view of the skyline, you can take a river cruise departing from Eiserner Steg. You can book your ticket in advance here!

Eiserner Steg is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and popular places to take photos against Frankfurt’s skyline. Aside from the views, you’ll also spot tons of love locks left on the bridge. Crossing the iron bridge from the city center brings you to Sachsenhausen, a fun district known for its vibrant nightlife and trendy restaurants.

Museum Embankment (Museumsufer)

The Museum Embankment is a group of museums lining both sides of the River Main. Some of the world-class museums located here include the Museum of World Cultures, Städel Museum, the German Film Museum, the Museum of Applied Art, and the Icon Museum.

If going to museums are a big priority for your travels, then they’re all worth visiting. But if you don’t have enough time for all, choose only one or two favorites to visit!

The Städel Museum is known as Germany’s oldest museum foundation. This historical museum houses an impressive collection of over 700 years of European art from the 14th century to Renaissance, Baroque, to early modern art. Highlights include masterpieces by Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso, and Vermeer.

Museum of Applied Art (Museum Angewandte Kunst)

On the other hand, the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Art is dedicated to contemporary art focusing on design, fashion, and performance. The alternating exhibitions aim to push the boundaries of aesthetics and the meaning of applied art. The museum’s architecture itself is a unique and experimental space that can be enjoyed with all the senses.

Frankfurt am Main Hauptbahnhof

Main Train Station (Frankfurter Hauptbahnhof)

Frankfurt’s central train station is a major transportation hub for both short and long distance traveling, welcoming over 350,000 passengers per day. The station offers direct connections to major cities like Brussels, Paris, and Amsterdam. If you’re planning any other trips from the city, Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof will certainly offer you the best travel connections.

European Central Bank

The European Central Bank is the central bank of the 19 EU countries that use the Euro. As one of the most significant financial institutions in the world, they are tasked with maintaining price stability. Though a fairly new building, the European Central Bank is sure to become an important urban landmark and feature of the city’s modern skyline.

Old Opera House (Alte Oper)

For other tourist spots further out from Old Town, check out Alte Oper. The historic opera house was damaged in World War II but was rebuilt in the 1970s. Now, it’s a concert hall where visitors can watch world-class musical productions and concerts of various genres such as classical music, jazz, and blues.

If you don’t have a lot of time left to catch a show, you can visit their website to find out when they offer guided tours in English.

City Hall (Rathaus), Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt Christmas Market (Frankfurter Weihnachtsmarkt)

If you’re traveling to Frankfurt during the holidays then you’re in for a treat! The main market, Frankfurt Christmas Market is widely known as one of the oldest in Germany. Römerberg, at the heart of Old Town, transforms into a festive wonderland, complete with a vintage carousel, sparkling lights, and a giant tree.

The great thing about this market is that it stretches from in both directions. You can head south towards the river if you want a break from all the crowds. Heading north towards Paulsplatz you’ll find rows of stalls selling traditional handicrafts and souvenirs.

Go farther up to Hauptwach and discover even more food stalls. So grab your glass of Apfelwein (apple wine), try Bethmännchen (Frankfurt traditional Christmas cookies) and enjoy the holidays!
