It’s always a good idea to be able to use some basic German phrases (even just hallo, bitte, danke & Toilette) but in the areas most travelers visit you’ll find people who speak enough English. The more off the beaten path you get the harder it could be to find people who are comfortable speaking English, so having a translation app on your phone is helpful!

How is the English in Germany? Is having a base level of knowledge on speaking German recommended when visiting Berchtesgaden or any of the surrounding villages and cities?

Hi! You can take the bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and then take other busses around the area – or even walk to some things. We did that on our most recent trip and it worked great. We use google maps for bus connections and walking directions so you can use that to find the right bus to Berchtesgaden (navigate from your accommodations) and then to go where you want to go in Berchtesgaden.

The main bus station is in front of the train station in Berchtesgaden. From there you can catch busses going to Königsee (and the Jennerbahn), Ramsau and Hintersee, the Salt Mine, and to the documentation center. You can walk into the Berchtesgaden Altstadt from the train station in 15 or so minutes (it’s uphill into town but downhill on the way back!) or you can take a bus or even a taxi. Hope that helps!

Hoping you can help me out. I’ll be in Salzburg in December 2024. From what I’m reading Eagle’s Nest is not open, but we are still wanting to do a day trip to Berchtesgaden and Konigssee. We won’t have a car. I’m can figure out taking a bus/train or even a cab if necessary to get us there and back. Am I going to be able to get around once there without a car? We are interested in maybe even doing a sleigh ride if that is possible. The more I search and read, the more confused I get. Any recommendations/suggestions?
