I’ve used this lightweight scarf in the spring/summer as a light wrap, and in the fall/winter as a cozy scarf with my jacket or coat. The one I have used for several years is no longer available but this highly rated carry-on spinner suitcase is similar and I have a travel bag I love from this brand.

Where to Stay in Heidelberg: Our Recommendation & Tips

Accommodation in Heidelberg is easy to find. There’s a range options from historic hotels to comfortable chains to guesthouses.

When choosing your Heidelberg accommodation, we highly recommend staying in the Altstadt (Old Town) area of the city. The Old Town has a unique, historic atmosphere and you’ll be surrounded by picturesque streets and architecture. It’s especially beautiful at night when the castle on the hill is lit up.

Staying in Old Town will also put you in close proximity to many of the city’s main landmarks including Schloss Heidelberg (Heidelberg Castle), Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), Universität Heidelberg (Heidelberg University), Heidelberger Marktplatz (Heidelberg Market Square), Jesuitenkirche (Jesuit Church), and more.

Many of these are within walking distance from one another, which gives you the time to explore as much of the city during your stay. Altstadt is also full of cafes, restaurants, and shops which makes it extra convenient. All of the hotels we recommend are either in or a short walk from the Old Town.

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin
Brandenburg Gate

Berlin is one of our favorite cities to visit because it’s the perfect mix of history, culture, and nature. There’s so much to see and do this magnificent city!

From strolling along the Spree River to visiting the stunning Berlin Cathedral for its panoramic views (or even attending a service there), pondering history next to a remnant of the Berlin Wall or splurging at the stores on the Friedrichstraße shopping street, this destination ticks all the boxes.

As the German capital, Berlin is a melting pot of people and traditions from all over the world. This wonder of a city is also home to various important landmarks like the Holocaust Memorial, the Berlin Wall (the pieces that are left), Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate), and the Fernsehturm (TV Tower), and world-class museums just to name a few (there are so many more – take a look here).

Even when the sun sets, Berlin remains alive with its vibrant nightlife and wide selection of German beer, creative cocktails, and more. It’s not dubbed as the party capital of Europe for nothing!

Whether you’re in Berlin for history, food, nightlife or to simply explore, this guide will help you find the perfect place to stay in Berlin that’s located in the middle of the city so you can maximize your visit.

Why Stay in Berlin Mitte (Center)?

Berlin is BIG. Fortunately, the downtown Mitte area, where most of the popular sights are, is very walkable and many of the things you’ll want to visit are located in or right near Mitte.

If you stay further outside of Mitte, you can still reach everything easily via public transportation – but you’ll need to factor in extra commuting time and transit costs.

We highly recommend staying in the general Berlin Mitte area, especially if you’re only in Berlin for a few days. That way you’ll be able to easily reach popular sights like:

  • Brandenburg Gate
  • Museum Island
  • Reichstag Building
  • Berlin Cathedral
  • Spree River
  • Alexanderplatz
  • Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
  • Friedrichstrasse and Tränenpalast
  • Berlin TV Tower
  • Berlin’s popular Hackescher Markt area
  • DDR Museum (Former German Democratic Republic)
  • Potsdamer Platz
  • Checkpoint Charlie
  • Jewish Museum
  • East Side Gallery
  • Berlin Wall Memorial
  • Pariser Platz
  • Nikolaiviertel
  • and much more!

Tourist spots located away from the center are also easily accessible via tram, bus, U-Bahn or S-Bahn (you definitely don’t need a car to get around Berlin as a visitor). If you want to take a day trip from Berlin, you can easily take the train, bus or a guided tour.

The only downside to staying in the Mitte area is that parts can get quieter at night. But if you want to, say, eat dinner away from the tourist zone, it’s super easy to head to Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Prenzlauer Berg or other neighborhoods for a meal or to simply explore Berlin’s neighborhoods, which we highly recommend doing at some point during your visit.

There are many cozy hotels right in the heart of Berlin that are convent, comfortable, and affordable. Here are the best places to stay in Berlin City Center that will help you maximize your stay in this beautiful city.

Where Else to Stay in Berlin?

Choosing where to stay in Berlin can be a difficult choice because each of Berlin’s different neighborhood offers something unique.

If you’re staying in Berlin for a few days and you’re a first-time visitor, we recommend staying in Mitte, the city center. This way you’ll be within walking distance to many of the city’s famous landmarks.

For those wanting a more “local” neighborhood vibe and ambiance, we recommend Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, just south of Mitte. It’s home to popular attractions like the East Side Gallery, Viktoriapark and the Oberbaumbrücke, and it’s easy to reach downtown sites from there using public transportation.

Prenzlauer Berg to the north is another highly walkable neighborhood full of cafes, bars, and restaurants.

Another popular neighborhood is Charlottenburg. It’s great for shopping, cultural activities, and learning about Berlin’s art scene. Some must-see sights in that neighborhood include Kurfürstendamm shopping street, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the Berlin Zoo, Tiergarten park, Schloss Charlottenburg, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

A Few More Options

Here are some other places worth checking out if you’re looking for more luxury options, boutique experiences, or simply want to venture out further from central Berlin:

  • Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin – One of the most luxurious hotels in Berlin located in Unter den Linden thus offering unique views of the Brandenburg Gate, which is located a quick 2-minutes away. Rooms are posh and opulent with amenities like an indoor pool, a sauna, and 4 fine dining restaurants. Their Aldon cake is amazing!
  • Sir Savigny Hotel – A stylish boutique hotel set within a historic building from the late 1800s. Located in the heart of Charlottenburg, one of Berlin’s most trendy and artistic neighborhoods.
  • Hotel am Steinplatz – An upscale 5-star hotel with modern Art-Deco elements. The gourmet restaurant offers delicious dishes inspired by nature using local, fresh German ingredients.
  • Gorki Apartments – High-end modern apartment complex with individually-designed rooms that range from penthouses, 2-bedroom suites, and studios. It’s around a 15-minute walk away from the Berlin Wall memorial.
  • The Mandala Hotel – A minimalistic boutique hotel that is steps away from steps from Potsdamer Platz. Upscale amenities include wellness and massage specials in their rooftop spa and a 2-Michelin-Star restaurant onsite called Facil.

Can I Really Stay the Night in a Castle in Germany?

Yes! No matter where you go to in Germany, you’re sure to find castles scattered all across the countryside, on top of mountains and hills, or overlooking valleys and rivers.

While most were rebuilt over the years and opened for public visits or turned into museums, others were renovated into luxury retreats or family-run boutique hotels.

This type of accommodation, called Schlosshotel in German, is the best way to experience what it’s like to sleep in a castle. You’ll experience history, and often a little (or a lot) of luxury. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

What Kind of Castle Can I Stay In?

Germany is home to an abundance of beautiful castles. While many may expect them to look like the grand castles of Walt Disney, there’s actually a diverse range of castle types all around the country.

Fairy tale castles like King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein castle are some of the most impressive feats of architecture in Germany. Typically, these castles serve as landmarks and museums and don’t have the option for guests to spend a night in. It’s the same case for the many castle ruins scattered across the country.

A lot of the castle hotels you can stay in are smaller castles owned by the families of the original founding families. Many of them look like luxurious countryside manors or palaces with sprawling gardens and outer buildings that house amenities like pools or spa and wellness centers.

Not all castle hotels are the same. Some of the hotel buildings are a part of the larger castle complex, and may be located in adjacent historic buildings, such as a manor house. A few of the hotels are in thoroughly modern buildings offering deluxe stays with pools, spas, saunas, and restaurants only steps away from the centuries-old caste. What most have in common are their stunning locations – often located on hilltops, cliffs or overlooking river valleys!

A few castle hotels. like Hotel Burg Hornburg in Bavaria or Burghotel auf Schönburg on the Rhine River, are actually medieval fortresses. These castle hotels offer some of the best scenic views since most of the time they are found atop cliffside mountains or hills, typical of how fortresses were built centuries ago.

What Is It Like to Stay in A German Castle Hotel?

Staying in a German castle hotel is a totally unique experience and often far more than just a place to sleep for a night or two.

We suggest carving specific days in your Germany trip itinerary for your stay in a castle hotel. This is because while many of the hotels are in the areas travelers enjoy visiting (the Rhine and Moselle River area, Romantic Road area, etc.), they’re not all super close to major city landmarks or next to tourist attractions.

So, staying in a castle hotel is really doing it for the experience as opposed to convenience for sightseeing. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of things to do while staying in castle hotels!

Though you may not be as close to famous city tourist sites, you might be closer to hiking trails, golf courses, historic villages, and other fun outdoor activities.

For those who prefer culinary experiences, many castle hotels house delicious restaurants where you can sample authentic specialties from the region. Many of them even offer special packages like a full-course candlelight dinner, wine tasting in the property’s vineyard, and even themed feasts in a medieval banquet hall.

What a fun and memorable way to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or the trip of a lifetime!

Aside from these activities, the ambiance and atmosphere of a castle hotel itself is one of the best parts of the experience. The hotels have a unique charm that you won’t find in a chain hotel in the city because these hotels are for the most part family-run enterprises.

The owners are often descendants of the castle’s earliest royal members such as barons, counts, or princes. You’ll see the history of the castle proudly displayed through special family memorabilia scattered throughout the castle.

The furnishings and decorations are equally as special. From four-poster beds to ornate chandeliers, most rooms in castle hotels are individually decorated. Many preserve the original antique furnishings of the castle and combine with them modern amenities to make for the perfect stay.

What’s The Best Way to Get to Castle Hotels?

Most castle hotels are farther out from the center of major cities than are normally included in your typical German vacation itinerary. For that reason, the best way to get to most castle hotels would be to rent a car. Most, if not all, of these castles offer free private parking, since it’s common for people to visit these places during a Germany road trip.

That said, there are a few castle hotels you can reach via public transit. We recommend you search each hotel’s official website where they list the nearest surrounding landmarks, instructions for what train or bus to take, and directions via car.

Does Anyone Live in Castles in Germany Today?

Yes! There are around 20,000 – 25,000 castles in Germany but the exact number is not known. There might be even more! While they’re not all occupied by royal families like they were before, you’ll be surprised to find out that there are some families who do still live in these castles to this day.

A few castles are still under the ownership of the founding families so they’re used as summer residences or private estates. Others have private wings that are inhabited by the family only, while the other wings are open to the public for visits.

Where to Stay in Rothenburg: Our Recommendation & Tips

  • When it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Rothenburg, you have a lot of options to choose from, since Rothenburg is a major tourist destination in Germany.
  • For those seeking an authentic and traditional experience, Rothenburg ob der Tauber hotels inside the old city wall offer a unique opportunity to take in in the medieval charm of the town.
  • These Old Town accommodations are often housed in historic buildings or charming half-timbered houses and have a mix of vintage touches with more modern amenities. We’ve always enjoyed staying in the charming Old Town so it’s easy to walk to everything.
  • If you prefer to stay outside the old city wall, there are also plenty of options like smaller guesthouses and bed and breakfasts and you’re likely to find prices a little lower. You can still easily reach the main city center and Old town since the town is pretty small and very walkable.
  • You could also have the convenience of being closer to the Rothenburg ob der Tauber Central Station if you stay outside of the Old Town. But do note that you won’t experience the same charm as in the Old Town.
  • When planning your stay, you may also be considering other factors like where to park in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, especially if you’re road tripping and arriving by rental car. While parking within the town’s walls is limited, many hotels offer parking options nearby or provide information on convenient parking facilities within walking distance.
  • There are also paid parking lots just outside the Old Town city wall that are just a short walk away. On our last overnight visit, we parked our car in a large public lot and walked about 10 minutes through the Old Town to our hotel. Overnight parking was reasonably priced, and it was easy enough to find our way to the hotel using google maps. The main parking lots are just to the east and north of the old town.
  • A/C is not a given in Germany, especially in historic buildings or small hotels and guesthouses. We sometimes opt for a hotel with A/C but we’ve found that most of the time just leaving the windows open or requesting a fan cools the room comfortably enough (unless there’s an extreme heat wave).

Rothenburg FAQ

view of Rothenburg
View of Rothenburg

Is it worth staying in Rothenburg?

Yes, it’s definitely worth staying in Rothenburg. While it may be more popular as a day trip from Nürnberg, Würzburg, Munich or other nearby cities, staying overnight lets you experience and appreciate the town in a different way.

For one, staying overnight enables you explore a less crowded Rothenburg in the morning and evening. At those times there are fewer people, which allows you to enjoy the town more and even get better photos, especially at popular sights like Plönlein or the Marktplatz.

Another reason to stay overnight is being able to take part in the fun Night Watchman Tour that begins at 8pm. It’s harder to catch this tour if you have to take the train back to your home base.

And most importantly, staying in a hotel for a night or two significantly contributes to preserving the historic essence of the city.

How many days do you need in Rothenburg?

You need at least 1 full day to see the main sights and enjoy the unique, historic atmosphere of the town. If you want to visit the museums, enjoy leisurely meals, and take your time, you should stay for 2 full days.

How many nights to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

We recommend staying 2 nights so you’re guaranteed 1 full day in Rothenburg. But depending on your itinerary and how much you want to see and do, 1 night can also work fine.

They’re the same! Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the full name (which translates to Rothenburg above the Tauber) and Rothenburg is just the shortened version that’s used more informally. But the two are used interchangeably to refer to the same place.

Where to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

The best places to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber are located in the Old Town. Most of the Rothenburg lodging is concentrated in this area so you’ll find lots of options in this zone while also being close to all the main landmarks of the town.

Where is Rothenburg, Germany?

Rothenburg is located in the Franconia region of Bavaria in the south of Germany. It’s also along the Romantic Road, a popular tourist route that passes through various medieval towns in southern Germany.

What is there to buy in Rothenburg, Germany?

Rothenburg is a great place to buy German Christmas ornaments and decorations, a “Schneeball” (fried dough balls dipped in powdered sugar that look like snowballs), and even medieval clothes and other items.

Got questions? We’ve got answers! Below are the questions about planning, transportation, accommodations, and preparing for departure we’re asked pretty much every day. We hope you find it helpful to have these answers all in one place.

TIP: If you have our Germany Travel Planner, be sure you read the tips & cautions in each section, digital planning map, and the planning guides (especially the videos) for answers to many more important travel planning and preparation questions! Don’t yet have our popular Germany Travel Planner? Get it here.

Planning Your Trip

Q. Where should I go in Germany? What are the top destinations?
A. We recommend starting with our destinations guide on our website here. If you have our Germany Travel Planner, watch the “Where to go in Germany” video screencast for a tour of popular and off the beaten path cities, castles, and sights. You’ll also find the regional planning guides and digital planning map helpful with both seeing your options and narrowing down what you most want to see and do.

Q. What castles should I visit?
A. Neuschwanstein castle is a popular option (it’s an easy day trip from Munich) but there are SO many amazing castles and castle ruins alllll over Germany! You can check out the castle guides on our website here, and if you have our Germany Travel Planner, take a look at the castles we recommend on our digital planning map so you can see photos, tips, info, and where they are located in relation to the towns you want to visit.

Q. Which Christmas markets are the best?
A. There are so many! This guide on our website shows you some of the best ones around.

Q. Can you take a look at my itinerary?
A. Yes, absolutely! You can book an itinerary review or a one-on-one consult here.

Q. If I’d like to do a consult or have you create a custom itinerary, how far in advance should I book?
A. Our calendar fills up pretty quickly, and while we can sometimes squeeze people in last minute, it’s better to book a few weeks to a couple months advance if at all possible. The earlier you book, the more flexibility you’ll have! Click here to reserve your spot for a one-on-one trip planning consult or custom itinerary.

Transportation

Q. Where should I buy train tickets and seat reservations?
A. We buy ours from Deutsche Bahn (website of DB Navigator app). But some of our clients prefer Omio or Trainline.

Q. Do I need to book train tickets in advance? What about seat reservations?
A. If you’re taking high speed trains (ICE/IC/EC) – yes, book ahead for the best prices! If you’re using the Deutschland-Ticket, you need to get your subscription set up in advance. If you’re using regional day tickets like the Bavaria Ticket, you can buy those as you go. We strongly recommend adding a seat reservation when buying tickets on high speed trains.

Q. How can I subscribe to the Deutschland-Ticket? What if I don’t have a German bank account?
A. You can subscribe via the Rhinebahn app and pay with a credit card. Or subscribe via the DB Navigator app and use Wise to send payment. Read our guide here for more info.

Tip: check out our Train Travel Made Easy section in the Germany Travel Planner for everything you need to know to enjoy smooth train travel in Germany.

Q. Do I need an international driver’s license to rent a car and drive in Germany?
A. While not required in Germany, it’s a good idea to get one anyway. It can be helpful to have it if you’re in an accident or get pulled over. And some car rental companies and countries (like Austria) do require you to have one. If you’re in the US, you can get an international driver’s license at AAA for about $30. We always get one just for peace of mind.

Q. Can I rent a car in Germany and drive it into a neighboring country?
 A. In most cases, yes, but do check with your rental company ahead of time. Be sure to tell them which countries you plan to drive in so you can pay the cross-border fee when you pick up your car. If driving in Austria or Switzerland you need to get a Vignette online or at a gas station in order to drive on the freeways. We don’t recommend picking up your car in one country and returning it in another – unless you like paying huge fees!

Q. Which car rental company is the best?
A. We’ve used all of the major car companies and have had good experiences with all them. Most recently we’ve been getting great rates with Europcar, Enterprise, and Sixt. We start our car rental searches here.

Q. Is it hard to drive in Germany?
A. Driving in Germany is different but not necessarily hard. We highly recommend this video driving tutorial so you feel confident and prepared from day 1!

Q. Can I take Uber/Lyft in Germany? Or is a taxi better?
A. You’ll find Uber in some parts of Germany but you won’t find Lyft at all (as of now). Locals use FreeNow instead. We haven’t used it ourselves but we’ve had clients tell use it worked great for them. You can also find regular taxis throughout Germany, especially outside of airports, train stations, etc.

Accommodations

Q. I’ve heard German hotels don’t have A/C. Is that correct?
A. Air conditioning (A/C) isn’t a given in Germany, so not all hotels have it. Especially smaller, older or budget options. And even if a hotel has A/C, it might not be as strong or cold as you’re used to. If having A/C is important to you, we recommend looking for a hotel with A/C in guest rooms and then read hotel reviews. If you’re looking for hotels with A/C, check the guides on our website here or our digital map in our Germany Travel Planner.

Q. How do I find a great hotel?
You can use our hotel guides here as a jumping off point. If you have our Germany Travel Planner, you can also look at our digital planning map to see where recommended hotels are in relation to top sights, castles, and more. It makes planning your trip so much easier! If you’d rather not spend hours searching for the perfect place to stay, let us do it for you by booking a custom itinerary.

Q. Can I book hotels as I go? Or should I book everything in advance?
A. We highly recommend booking accommodations in advance (we do). Especially if you’re traveling during the busy season (summer, Oktoberfest, Christmas market season, etc), if you want to stay in the old town, need a room for more than 2 people or want specific amenities (like A/C ).

We’ve had clients wait and then find that a local event (or a concert, game, etc) they didn’t know about made rooms scarce and expensive! And, do you really want to spend your sight-seeing or relaxation time in Germany stressing about finding a room for the night – and potentially not having the amenities you’re looking for or paying more than you’d like?

I say all of this as someone who never booked anything in advance until a few years ago…but I absolutely do now! Use the accommodation guides on our website here or the digital planning map in our Germany Travel Planner to make finding the perfect accommodation easier.

Cate & Aaron at Neuschwanstein

Preparing for Departure

Q. How can I use my cell phone in Germany? Is getting an eSIM the best option?
A. Getting an eSIM is a popular option. You can also check with your provider to see if they offer a short-term international plan. Our guide here will help you decide what will work best for you.

Q. Do Germans speak English? How much German should I know before I go?
A. It’s always a good idea to be able to use some basic German phrases to put your best foot forward (even just hallo, bitte, danke) but in the areas most travelers visit you’ll find people who speak – or at least understand – enough English. The more off the beaten path you get the harder it could be to find people who are comfortable speaking English, so having a translation app on your phone is helpful.

Q. Can you recommend a good restaurant?
A. Check out these recommendations from our travel community! You can also find our recommendations on the digital planning map in our Germany Travel Planner.

Q. How much should I tip in restaurants in Germany?
A. Tipping culture in Germany is different from the US. Servers in Germany appreciate tips but don’t rely on them for income like in the US. All you need to do is round up, usually about 10%. Give the server the tip when you pay for the meal (don’t leave it on the table). So if your coffee costs €4.50, you could give the server €5. If your meal costs €45.00 you could give the server €50. We’ve been seeing more automated options for adding a tip and suggested percentages when paying with a credit card but they’re not yet as ubiquitous as they are in the US (yet).

Q. Can I use credit cards in Germany? Or is cash better?
A. These days you can use credit cards in many places – much more than even a few years ago. Visa is widely accepted. But it’s a good idea to still have cash on you, especially when traveling in smaller towns. Some stores, restaurants, sights, and parking lots only accept cash.  And sometimes you’ll find that your specific credit card isn’t accepted…or that the machine just won’t process your card for some reason.

Q. Should I get Euros before or after arriving in Germany?
A. You can order Euros from your bank before leaving for Germany. Or you can wait until arriving in Germany to withdraw cash using your debit card from a bank ATM. If you can get a Wise card, that’s another easy way to get cash.

Where to Stay in Cologne: Our Recommendations

Cologne is a very walkable city, and fortunately, there are lots of cozy hotels right in the heart of Cologne. Tourist spots that are located away from the center are easily accessible via tram, bus, U-bahn or S-bahn.

The last time we were in Cologne, we stayed at the Kozept Hotel zum kostbaren Blut in the Altstadt near the vibrant pedestrian area full of shopping, restaurants, bars, and cafes. We were able to easily walk to the hotel from the train station (with our luggage) and get to everything we wanted to see and do in the city, including the famous Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), the Rhine river, the Chocolate Museum, the Belgian Quarter, and more.

We highly recommend staying in the downtown area so you have easy access to everything Cologne has to offer (see our Cologne City Guide for what to do and see there). The hotels in this guide are all conveniently located in the city center.

If Cologne will be your first stop in Germany, the nearest large airport to fly into is Düsseldorf. Depending on where you’re flying from, you might be able to get a direct international flight. Frankfurt is a bit further but still convenient.

A Few More Options

If you’re looking for luxury, would prefer to stay a bit outside of the city center, or are looking for something more unique, here are some great options:

  • Savoy Hotel – With its sophisticated suites and interiors, this hotel makes for a great luxury stay. But it’s not as close to the Cologne Cathedral, around a 10-minute walk.
  • Qvest Hideaway Cologne – This designer hotel is set in a historic building built in 1897 and is certainly one of a kind. This hidden gem is a 15-minute walk away from the Cologne Cathedral.
  • Hyatt Regency Köln – Upscale hotel featuring modern suites with river views. Comes highly rated though it’s located on the other side of the Rhine.
  • 25hours Hotel – A boutique hotel with vibrant, vintage-style rooms and furnishings located in a retro building. It’s also located a bit further outside of Old Town.
  • Adina Apartment Hotel Cologne – Great for those looking for an apartment-style hotel and modern studios. It’s a very new accommodation and is on the other side of the Rhine.
  • Villahotel Rheinblick – This hotel is a grand villa by the Rhine River with beautiful traditional rooms. Though its unique location means it’s quite far from the city center.

What To Look for in a Hotel in Cologne

When looking for a place to stay in Cologne, we recommend considering which of the factors below are most important to you.

  1. Central location in the Altstadt (Old Town) downtown area. In Cologne, if you want to stay in the heart of the city, the best location is within walking distance of the Cathedral. That way you’ll also be close proximity to Cologne central station (which is right across from the Cathedral), all of the main sights, lots of options for food and drinks, and public transportation in general.
  2. Number and size of beds. You’re likely to have the option to book a variety of bed types – e.g., king (which might be 1 mattress or 2 twins on one king-sized frame – often with 2 duvets), a queen, or 1 or more twins. Sometimes a single room will have a queen or a twin. Not all of these will be available every hotel, though, so be sure to check what type of beds they offer.
  3. Rooms with en suite full baths. Most hotels offer full en suite bathrooms, some with a bathtub, some with a bathtub and shower combo, others will just have a shower. Some hotels in Germany – usually smaller boutique hotels or budget hotels – will offer rooms with a shared hall bathroom. The hotels in this list have full en suite bathrooms.
  4. Rooms with A/C. Summers in Germany can at times be hot and humid. Not all hotels in Germany have A/C, so if this is important to you, be sure to specifically look for it before booking. Note: if you don’t have A/C in your hotel, you’ll likely be able to open the windows (though you’re not likely to have a screened-in window). Some hotels offer a fan. It typically cools down in the evenings, so we don’t have A/C, we simply leave the windows open all night and are comfortable (and I’m not someone who tolerates heat very well).
  5. Breakfast. Most hotels offer free or paid breakfast (sometimes whether or not you get a free breakfast depends on the type of room you book). Many hotels offer a full German breakfast buffet, while others are simpler (bread, Brötchen, cold cuts, jam, coffee, tea). American chain hotels may offer an American-style breakfast (eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc.). Some hotels do not offer breakfast at all but it’s easy to find a cafe, bakery or grocery store nearby.
  6. An elevator. While you’re likely to find an elevator in large, modern hotels with high floors, stairs might be the only option at older, boutique or smaller hotels. If you don’t mind carrying your luggage up a few flights of stairs, these non-elevator hotels are often quite charming. But if an elevator is important to you, look for larger, modern, or chain hotels.
  7. Parking. Some city center hotels will offer on-site parking for a daily fee. If there’s no on-site parking, you can likely find a nearby public parking area or on-street parking.
  8. Free Wi-Fi. Most hotels will offer free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel but it’s a good idea to check on that if having free Wi-Fi is important to you.
  9. Amenities. Hotels may offer facilities such as a gym, sauna, indoor pool, on-site restaurants and bars, or services like valet parking, a concierge or laundry service. Some even offer babysitting services! Many hotels offer the option to pay at the hotel and fully refundable rooms – sometimes at a slightly higher price than pre-pay or non-refundable rooms.
  10. Good value. Staying in a popular part of the city will typically cost more than staying further out but you’ll be able to easily walk to many sites and you’ll be close to public transportation. So, you’ll not only have more flexibility during the day, you’ll also save time and stress by not having to “commute” to the city center each day.
