Can I Really Stay the Night in a Castle in Germany?

Yes! No matter where you go to in Germany, you’re sure to find castles scattered all across the countryside, on top of mountains and hills, or overlooking valleys and rivers.

While most were rebuilt over the years and opened for public visits or turned into museums, others were renovated into luxury retreats or family-run boutique hotels.

This type of accommodation, called Schlosshotel in German, is the best way to experience what it’s like to sleep in a castle. You’ll experience history, and often a little (or a lot) of luxury. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

What Kind of Castle Can I Stay In?

Germany is home to an abundance of beautiful castles. While many may expect them to look like the grand castles of Walt Disney, there’s actually a diverse range of castle types all around the country.

Fairy tale castles like King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein castle are some of the most impressive feats of architecture in Germany. Typically, these castles serve as landmarks and museums and don’t have the option for guests to spend a night in. It’s the same case for the many castle ruins scattered across the country.

A lot of the castle hotels you can stay in are smaller castles owned by the families of the original founding families. Many of them look like luxurious countryside manors or palaces with sprawling gardens and outer buildings that house amenities like pools or spa and wellness centers.

Not all castle hotels are the same. Some of the hotel buildings are a part of the larger castle complex, and may be located in adjacent historic buildings, such as a manor house. A few of the hotels are in thoroughly modern buildings offering deluxe stays with pools, spas, saunas, and restaurants only steps away from the centuries-old caste. What most have in common are their stunning locations – often located on hilltops, cliffs or overlooking river valleys!

A few castle hotels. like Hotel Burg Hornburg in Bavaria or Burghotel auf Schönburg on the Rhine River, are actually medieval fortresses. These castle hotels offer some of the best scenic views since most of the time they are found atop cliffside mountains or hills, typical of how fortresses were built centuries ago.

What Is It Like to Stay in A German Castle Hotel?

Staying in a German castle hotel is a totally unique experience and often far more than just a place to sleep for a night or two.

We suggest carving specific days in your Germany trip itinerary for your stay in a castle hotel. This is because while many of the hotels are in the areas travelers enjoy visiting (the Rhine and Moselle River area, Romantic Road area, etc.), they’re not all super close to major city landmarks or next to tourist attractions.

So, staying in a castle hotel is really doing it for the experience as opposed to convenience for sightseeing. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of things to do while staying in castle hotels!

Though you may not be as close to famous city tourist sites, you might be closer to hiking trails, golf courses, historic villages, and other fun outdoor activities.

For those who prefer culinary experiences, many castle hotels house delicious restaurants where you can sample authentic specialties from the region. Many of them even offer special packages like a full-course candlelight dinner, wine tasting in the property’s vineyard, and even themed feasts in a medieval banquet hall.

What a fun and memorable way to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or the trip of a lifetime!

Aside from these activities, the ambiance and atmosphere of a castle hotel itself is one of the best parts of the experience. The hotels have a unique charm that you won’t find in a chain hotel in the city because these hotels are for the most part family-run enterprises.

The owners are often descendants of the castle’s earliest royal members such as barons, counts, or princes. You’ll see the history of the castle proudly displayed through special family memorabilia scattered throughout the castle.

The furnishings and decorations are equally as special. From four-poster beds to ornate chandeliers, most rooms in castle hotels are individually decorated. Many preserve the original antique furnishings of the castle and combine with them modern amenities to make for the perfect stay.

What’s The Best Way to Get to Castle Hotels?

Most castle hotels are farther out from the center of major cities than are normally included in your typical German vacation itinerary. For that reason, the best way to get to most castle hotels would be to rent a car. Most, if not all, of these castles offer free private parking, since it’s common for people to visit these places during a Germany road trip.

That said, there are a few castle hotels you can reach via public transit. We recommend you search each hotel’s official website where they list the nearest surrounding landmarks, instructions for what train or bus to take, and directions via car.

Does Anyone Live in Castles in Germany Today?

Yes! There are around 20,000 – 25,000 castles in Germany but the exact number is not known. There might be even more! While they’re not all occupied by royal families like they were before, you’ll be surprised to find out that there are some families who do still live in these castles to this day.

A few castles are still under the ownership of the founding families so they’re used as summer residences or private estates. Others have private wings that are inhabited by the family only, while the other wings are open to the public for visits.

Where to Stay in Rothenburg: Our Recommendation & Tips

  • When it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Rothenburg, you have a lot of options to choose from, since Rothenburg is a major tourist destination in Germany.
  • For those seeking an authentic and traditional experience, Rothenburg ob der Tauber hotels inside the old city wall offer a unique opportunity to take in in the medieval charm of the town.
  • These Old Town accommodations are often housed in historic buildings or charming half-timbered houses and have a mix of vintage touches with more modern amenities. We’ve always enjoyed staying in the charming Old Town so it’s easy to walk to everything.
  • If you prefer to stay outside the old city wall, there are also plenty of options like smaller guesthouses and bed and breakfasts and you’re likely to find prices a little lower. You can still easily reach the main city center and Old town since the town is pretty small and very walkable.
  • You could also have the convenience of being closer to the Rothenburg ob der Tauber Central Station if you stay outside of the Old Town. But do note that you won’t experience the same charm as in the Old Town.
  • When planning your stay, you may also be considering other factors like where to park in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, especially if you’re road tripping and arriving by rental car. While parking within the town’s walls is limited, many hotels offer parking options nearby or provide information on convenient parking facilities within walking distance.
  • There are also paid parking lots just outside the Old Town city wall that are just a short walk away. On our last overnight visit, we parked our car in a large public lot and walked about 10 minutes through the Old Town to our hotel. Overnight parking was reasonably priced, and it was easy enough to find our way to the hotel using google maps. The main parking lots are just to the east and north of the old town.
  • A/C is not a given in Germany, especially in historic buildings or small hotels and guesthouses. We sometimes opt for a hotel with A/C but we’ve found that most of the time just leaving the windows open or requesting a fan cools the room comfortably enough (unless there’s an extreme heat wave).

For one, staying overnight enables you explore a less crowded Rothenburg in the morning and evening. At those times there are fewer people, which allows you to enjoy the town more and even get better photos, especially at popular sights like Plönlein or the Marktplatz.

Another reason to stay overnight is being able to take part in the fun Night Watchman Tour that begins at 8pm. It’s harder to catch this tour if you have to take the train back to your home base.

And most importantly, staying in a hotel for a night or two significantly contributes to preserving the historic essence of the city.

How many days do you need in Rothenburg?

You need at least 1 full day to see the main sights and enjoy the unique, historic atmosphere of the town. If you want to visit the museums, enjoy leisurely meals, and take your time, you should stay for 2 full days.

How many nights to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

We recommend staying 2 nights so you’re guaranteed 1 full day in Rothenburg. But depending on your itinerary and how much you want to see and do, 1 night can also work fine.

What is the difference between Rothenburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

They’re the same! Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the full name (which translates to Rothenburg above the Tauber) and Rothenburg is just the shortened version that’s used more informally. But the two are used interchangeably to refer to the same place.

Where to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

The best places to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber are located in the Old Town. Most of the Rothenburg lodging is concentrated in this area so you’ll find lots of options in this zone while also being close to all the main landmarks of the town.

Where is Rothenburg, Germany?

Rothenburg is located in the Franconia region of Bavaria in the south of Germany. It’s also along the Romantic Road, a popular tourist route that passes through various medieval towns in southern Germany.

What is there to buy in Rothenburg, Germany?

Rothenburg is a great place to buy German Christmas ornaments and decorations, a “Schneeball” (fried dough balls dipped in powdered sugar that look like snowballs), and even medieval clothes and other items.

Where to Stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: Our Recommendation & Tips

  • We recommend staying in or near Garmisch-Partenkirchen’s Old Towns (Garmisich and Partenkirchen each have an Old Town and you can walk from one to the other in about 15 minutes).

You’ll find everything you need in this area: restaurants, cafes, hotels, and shops all with a traditional and charming Alpine atmosphere. It’s a relatively small zone so it’s highly walkable. You’ll be within walking distance to key sites like the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Train Station, Zugspitzbahnhof, (the train that takes you to the Zugspitze gondola and Eibsee lake), the Partnach gorge, Garmisch Olympia Ice Sport Stadium (Olympia-Eissport-Zentrum), and more.
  • If you’re traveling to Garmisch-Partenkirchen by train and plan to day trip to other sights in the area like Zugsptize, Eibsee, Linderhof Palace, Oberammergau, Mittenwald, Innsbruck, Austria or Neuschwanstein Castle, we highly recommend staying close to the train and bus station.

We stayed close to the train station on a recent trips and not only was it convenient for catching trains and busses to area sights, it was easy to walk to both Garmisch and Partenkirchen, as well as Partnachklamm (Partnach gorge). Bonus – we didn’t have to walk very far with our luggage when we arrived and departed Garmisch-Partenkirchen!
  • If staying in the town center isn’t a priority for you or if you plan to drive to area sights, then we definitely recommend considering Lake Riesser or the Grainau area. Lake Riesser is just outside Garmisch and Grainau is located further south, directly at the foot of the Zugspitze mountain. Staying in either location offers a peaceful and scenic retreat that is still within easy access to beautiful small towns and outdoor activities in nature.

Where to Stay in Berchtesgaden, Germany: Our Recommendation & Tips

  • For places to stay in Berchtesgaden, Germany, we recommend staying in the town center or near the Berchtesgaden main train station .
  • Because the town is quite small, if you stay in one of these locations you’ll feel centrally located and will have easy access to the town’s amenities, attractions, and public transit. Staying in the town center means you’ll also be close to many restaurants, shops, cafes, and stores.
  • Another option would be to stay further out from the center and near scenic Obersalzberg. Here you’ll be nearer to some of Berchtesgaden’s most famous landmarks like Eagle’s Nest and Dokumentation Obersalzberg. Hotels here are a bit more remote and isolated (so you may prefer to have a rental car at your disposal) but they also offer unparalleled scenic views and a tranquil atmosphere in the Alps.
  • Summer travelers: note that air conditioning is not always standard at hotels in Germany, especially smaller hotels or those in historic buildings. Because it usually cools down at night, we almost always sleep fine with the windows open and sometimes a fan blowing (ask your hotel if they can put one in your room). If a/c is important to you, double check that your hotel has it in the guest rooms.

No matter where you stay, we’re confident you’ll love this gorgeous part of the Alps! If you’re wondering what you can do in this area, check out our Berchtesgaden guide here.

Berchtesgaden FAQ

Where is Berchtesgaden?

Berchtesgaden is in the state of Bavaria in the southeastern part of Germany. It’s situated in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border.

Is Berchtesgaden worth visiting?

Yes, Berchtesgaden definitely worth visiting! We love it there. It’s a beautiful area that combines history, natural wonders, and fun cultural activities. It has a rich history with its connections to WWII, so there are various historical and educational sites to visit such as Eagle’s Nest and the Obersalzberg Documentation Center. It’s also a popular destination for outdoor recreational activities like hiking, skiing, and trekking because of its beautiful natural landscapes. And it’s easy to enjoy the area by car or by public transit.

Read our full guide for more ideas on what to do and see in Berchtesgaden.

How long to stay in Berchtesgaden?

We recommend staying in Berchtesgaden for at least 2-3 days. This allows you to experience the historic town, visit many of the famous landmarks in the area, and even enjoy a hike or outdoor Alpine activities.

That said, Berchtesgaden is also a popular day trip option from Salzburg (around 30 minutes by car) or Munich (around 2.5 hours by car). If you won’t have access to a car, you can take the train or book a full-day, small group tour so you can relax and enjoy your time in Berchtesgaden.

Do I need a car in Berchtesgaden?

No, you don’t necessarily need a car to get around. Berchtesgaden is a relatively compact and walkable town and the public transit system is pretty extensive, so many attractions are accessible on foot or by bus. We recommend a rental car only if you’re interested in exploring the surrounding countryside, visit more remote sights, or venture deeper into the Alps.

We’ve visited Berchtesagden with and without a rental car and enjoyed each visit tremendously!

Why is Berchtesgaden famous?

Berchtesgaden is famous for different reasons. Many people associate it with its historical significance during WWII, as it served as a retreat and headquarters for Hitler. But Berchtesgaden is also famous for its stunning natural Alpine beauty, working salt mine, relaxed atmosphere, and fun activities for each season of the year.

Tip: Don’t Wait to Book Accommodations For Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is one of the most well known cultural events in the world! Millions of people from all over the world fly to Munich, Germany just to experience the world’s largest beer festival.

You can imagine just how packed and crowded with tourists the Bavarian capital gets during this time. Everything from hotels, hostels, and AirBnbs get booked pretty quickly. Most people book their accommodations months to a year or more in advance in order to find the best deals, good locations…or anything at all.

That’s why choosing where to stay is one of the most important decisions to make when planning your trip! This guide will help you choose the best place to stay in Munich for Oktoberfest.

We’ve not only spent many weeks exploring Munich over the years, we’ve invested time in searching out great hotels for Oktoberfest so you can book with confidence. In this guide we share where we’ve stayed, as well as hotels recommended by members of our travel community.

When Is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest usually begins mid-September and goes on until early October, specifically the first Sunday of October. The festival typically lasts 16 to 18 days. The dates change each year. This year, the 189th Oktoberfest, will be held from Saturday, September 21st to Sunday, October 6th.

On September 16, the first Saturday of Oktoberfest, the tents will open at 9 am. Non-alcoholic beverages (except beer!) will be available from 10 am. One of the top highlights of the opening is the traditional tapping of the first beer barrel which happens at exactly 12 noon, marking the official start of Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest area

Where Is Oktoberfest?

The official Oktoberfest grounds is Theresienwiese, where it is held every year. It is one of Munich’s largest festival grounds. It is located south west of the city center Old Town.

Its central location means it’s pretty easily reachable by foot, bike, and public transportation. It has its own underground station Theresienwiese on the U-bahn (U4 and U5 lines). If you find the station too crowded, you can also opt for the nearby Goetheplatz and Poccistraße train stations on the U3 and U6 lines.

The nearest S-Bahn station is Hackerbrücke which is also 2 minutes away from München Hauptbahnhof, Munich central station.

The Oktoberfest festival is typically made up of 17 large tents and 21 small tents. From big beer tents serving local brew, to traditional dance floors with live brass music, and to smaller tents selling traditional Bavarian food, there is something for everyone.

Oktoberfest

Where’s The Best Place To Stay For Oktoberfest?

There are a couple of different areas that are worth looking into for your Oktoberfest accommodation. Each of them has their own pros and cons.

First, the Ludwig-Vorstadt-Isarvorstadt borough of Munich, home to the Theresienwiese, where Oktoberfest takes place, and the renowned Deutsches Museum.

There’s also the most well known neighborhoods in the area, which are Gärtnerplatzviertel and Glockenbachviertel, also known as the gay district of Munich. These are cool and upcoming neighborhoods filled with trendy bars, fun pubs, and hip restaurants.

The biggest advantage of staying in these areas is definitely the close proximity to Theresienwiese. You’ll be within walking distance of the festival grounds and won’t have to worry about navigating public transportation after long days or nights.

But since it’s such a prime location for Oktoberfest, hotels here book up months in advance. So there’s often a lack of availability, not to mention that prices can also be slightly more expensive compared to other places.

Another of the best areas to stay in is the Altstadt (Old Town) in the center of Munich. You’ll find tons of great hotel options from Marienplatz to the main train station.

The Old Town is not only a convenient location for walking or taking pubic transit to Oktoberfest, it’s also close to top landmarks in the city such as Munich Residenz, Marienplatz, English Garden (Englischer Garten) and many more. So the Altstadt is a great option if you want to visit Oktoberfest but also want to see a lot of other parts of the city.

Where To Stay In Munich: Our Recommendations & Tips

  • Munich is one of the best cities to explore by foot, so we recommend booking one of the lovely hotels right in the heart of the city. That way you’ll be within easy walking distance to the main sights and a variety of great restaurants, cafes, and beer halls and gardens.
  • There are 3 main areas we recommend staying in Munich for ease, affordability, and comfort: near the main train station, near the Theresienwies, and in the Old Town (Altstadt).
  • Sights located away from the city center are easily accessible via tram, bus, U-bahn, S-bahn. or HOHO bus. All of our recommended hotels have easy access to public transportation.
  • Many hotels also offer parking – but do note that you don’t need a car to get around Munich. Unless you’re doing a day trip by car, you’ll likely want to leave your car at the hotel while you explore the city.
  • One one visit we stayed at the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt and loved that it was on a quiet side-street but still super close to the Old Town. The room was cozy and comfortable and breakfast was excellent.
  • On another visit we stayed at Schwan Locke aparthotel. We loved being able to walk to the Old Town and train station in 10-15 minutes. We also liked having a kitchenette, laundry facilities, underground parking, and an inner courtyard.

We’ve not only spent many weeks exploring Munich over the years, but we’ve also invested time in searching out great hotels in the city so you can book with confidence. We share the places we’ve stayed and recommend, as well as hotels recommended by members of our travel community.

Here are some of the best Munich hotels to stay in the city center that will help you maximize your time in this beautiful Bavarian city!

Munich

Can I Go To Switzerland & Austria From Germany?

This is a question I’m frequently asked in one-on-one trip planning consults. The quick answer? Yes, it’s totally possible. I’ve helped lots of clients create an unforgettable itinerary that combines Germany with one or both of these beautiful countries.

The most important thing to consider when planning your own route is your starting point in Germany. That’s why we’ve organized the itinerary ideas below around 3 convenient starting points in Germany.

Not only are these starting points popular destinations, they’re also convenient for hopping across the border into Switzerland and Austria. We also suggest where you can go in both Austria and Switzerland so you can plan an unforgettable trip.

Starting Point #1: Southern Germany

Bavaria, a beautiful region in southern Germany, is the easiest starting point for a journey through both Germany and Austria. Here are destinations to consider adding to your itinerary.

Tip: if you have our Germany Travel Planner, be sure to use the Trip Planning Spreadsheet, City Cheatsheets, and Germany Planning Map to help you plan your itinerary.

Munich

Munich

One of the best places to start your journey is Munich, the largest city in southern Germany. The Bavarian capital is known for many things including Oktoberfest, historic sights, delicious beer and food, and excellent iconic views and scenery.

Because there’s so much to do and see in walkable Munich, we recommend staying for a couple of days — at the very minimum 2 days. This will allow you to get a good taste of Munich by seeing most of the city’s highlights in the center of town and something a bit further out.

When choosing your accommodation, it’s best to stay somewhere in the city center Altstadt (Old Town). This way most of the main tourist sites will be within walking distance or a short ride away via public transportation. Read our full guide with recommendations for the best hotels in Munich, including where we’ve stayed.

If you stay in the Altstadt (Old Town), you can spend a day visiting historic buildings like the Neus Rathaus (New Town Hall) and the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in Marienplatz. Make sure to stop by the central food market, Viktuellenmarkt, and the Munich Residenz, the biggest city palace in Germany (my favorite part of our palace visit was the Cuvilliés Theatre).

Munich hotel

Tip: if you have our Germany Travel Planner you’ll find recommended hotels on our interactive planning map. Seeing where these hotels are in relation to the top sights makes it a lot easier to find the perfect place to stay. If you don’t yet have it, click here to get access.

After stopping by the palace, you can easily make your way to the beautiful Englischer Garten (English Garden) and grab drinks at the famous Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm (Chinese Tower Beer Garden) or simply take a relaxing stroll through this famous park.

The next day, depending on how much time you have, you can visit a sight that is a bit further from the center. One suggestion to head out to Nymphenburg Palace to admire its beautiful gardens and luxurious pavilions. Another half-day activity is taking a guided tour to the memorial site of Dachau Concentration Camp for a moving and educational experience.

Another option? Make Munich your home base and stay for several days. One of the reasons Munich is such a popular destination in Germany is because there are so many amazing day trip options nearby.

The most popular day trip is without a doubt Neuschwanstein Castle. Millions of people each year visit Germany to see this beautiful castle straight out of a fairy tale nestled in the Bavarian Alps. No matter when you visit, the castle and its landscapes are gorgeous year round, and especially magical during the winter season.

For more day trip ideas, read our full guide on the best day trips to take from Munich. Many of the locations below can be done as a day trip from Munich before making your way to Austria.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen comprises two small towns that have grown together and are located about an hour or so away from Munich. Both towns are well known for being a hotspot for winter sports as they regularly host skiing championships (when there’s enough snow).

This area is beautiful year round and can be visited on a day trip from Munich or you can spend a couple days here before venturing into Austria. There’s a lot to do around Garmisch-Partenkirchen so you’ll easily find enough to fill 2 or more days.

If you like hiking, you’ll love this area because Garmisch is surrounded by amazing mountains, hiking paths and natural areas, most notably Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm), Eibsee lake, and Zugspitze, which is Germany’s highest peak. There you’ll find sweeping views of the Alps and Germany’s highest beer garden.

Partnach Gorge is easy to reach by bus or on foot from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Zugspitze and Eibsee lake are about 40 minutes away by train or bus. You can also drive to each.

You can also have a laidback afternoon, evening or full day in Garmisch and Partenkirchen. Walk around each small town taking in the alpine scenery, ornate churches, traditional painted Bavarian houses, and the feel of the cobblestone streets.

Be sure to stop for a meal, beer or Kaffee und Kuchen. Tip: we had a delicious coffee, tea, and freshly made “house cake” at Wildkaffee Cafe.

Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden is another of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations. It lies within the breathtaking Berchtesgaden Alps and is surrounded on three sides by Austria. Salzburg is only a short drive (around 45 minutes) away from Berchtesgaden, making it the perfect next stop as you make your way from Germany to Austria.

Berchtesgaden has a unique atmosphere thanks to its beautiful location surrounded by the mountains. We recommend staying 2-3 days to make the most of it.

Known for its association with World War II, there are many historical and educational sites to visit like Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus in German) and the Obersalzberg Documentation Center.

Originally built as a mountaintop retreat during the Nazi regime, Eagle’s Nest now serves as a popular tourist destination for the panoramic views of the stunning alpine scenery. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the area, then Obersalzberg Documentation Center is a must-visit (currently closed for renovation).

For more outdoor activities, make sure to visit the Berchtesgaden National Park. It’s rich with natural landscapes like rugged mountains, narrow gorges, and pristine lakes. We recommend visiting the Königsee, taking the Jennerbahn cable car, and hiking from Ramsau to Hintersee lake. If you have extra free time, the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines are also a fun site to add to your itinerary.

Click here to see our recommendations for where to stay in Berchtesgaden and more information about what to do and see in this beautiful area.

Salzburg

The city of Salzburg is the easiest entry way into Austria as the travel time from Berchtesgaden is only around 45 minutes away by car (you can also take the train or bus). This picturesque city is known around the world as the setting of the musical “The Sound of Musicand as the birthplace of Mozart.

Salzburg’s historic center houses many of the city’s important landmarks and it’s small enough so that they are within walking distance of each other. You can easily spend a day (or more) wandering the beautiful squares and streets of the downtown area. You’ll also find Mozart’s former residence, the Salzburg Cathedral, Hohensalzburg Fortress, and the Mirabell Palace and Gardens. During December you can visit their beautiful Christmas market.

Zell am See

Located around an hour away from Salzburg, Zell am See would be the ideal next stop in your trip into Austria. This town lies on one of the nicest alpine lakes, Lake Zell. The lakeside town is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts with a wide range of activities throughout the year.

In the summer, visitors can indulge in hiking, biking, and water sports on the lake, while in winter, the town transforms into a winter wonderland for skiing and snowboarding. You can also explore the town square and lively pedestrian zone to do some shopping or try some exquisite Austrian pastries and desserts at a coffee shop.

Innsbruck

After a scenic drive of around 2 hours, you’ll make your way to Innsbruck. This city nestled in the heart of the Alps is famous for being a winter sports destination. One of the main reasons to visit are for the world-class ski resorts around the city but there’s also so much more to see and do in Innsbruck.

One of Innsbruck’s highlights is its charming and picturesque cityscape, especially with the backdrop of the Nordkette mountain range and the River Inn. In Old Town, make sure to visit the famous Golden Roof, a building with a shimmering roof adorned with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles, and the majestic Hofburg Palace.

You can also take a cable car into the Nordkette and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views. We once took the cable car to the top, then walked back down to Innsbruck. While it was a long walk and we were quite sore for a few days, it was a lot of fun!

Vienna

Vienna

Another option in this itinerary would be to go to Vienna from Salzburg. Even though the train ride is only a about 2.5 hours and 3 hours by car, we recommend spending a couple of days here. A day trip would not be enough time to really enjoy everything there is to do and see in the Austrian capital.

Vienna is a memorable destination that combines history, architecture, and culture. Some must-see landmarks include Schonbrunn Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Hofburg. The Vienna State Opera is also a must for opera and classical music lovers. Vienna is also home to world-class museums like the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Belvedere Palace, and Albertina.

If you have a couple weeks to travel, you could see most or even all of these places in Germany and Austria by car or train.

Starting Point#2: Germany’s Black Forest

Located in the southwestern region of Germany, the Black Forest is an ideal starting point for exploring both Germany and Switzerland. We recommend making one place in the Black Forest your home base and exploring the rest through day trips.

Here are some beautiful places to add to your Germany and Switzerland itinerary.

Black Forest house

Tip: if you have our Germany Travel Planner, be sure to use the Trip Planning Spreadsheet, City Cheatsheets, and Germany Planning Map to help you plan your itinerary.

Baden-Baden

Situated in the northern region of the Black Forest, the old resort town of Baden-Baden offers a wide selection of relaxing activities and rejuvenating retreats for all sorts of travelers. Renowned for its soothing natural hot springs, extensive spa and wellness facilities, and therapeutic thermal baths, Baden-Baden invites everyone to unwind and recharge after a long day of traveling.

Aside from its luxurious wellness offerings, the town is also great for sports enthusiasts looking to do something active like hiking, biking or spending a day in the prestigious golf courses and equestrian clubs.

Triberg im Schwarzwald

Another great place to go in the Black Forest is Triberg, located just over an hour away from Baden-Baden. This smaller town is closely associated with the famous Black Forest cuckoo clocks! You can even find the world’s largest cuckoo clock here.

Triberg is also home to the Triberg Waterfalls, a series of waterfalls near the Gutach river and considered to be one of Germany’s highest waterfalls. It very pretty and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of the famous red squirrels.

Although this town leans touristy, Triberg is worth adding to your itinerary if you’re looking for a home base that has a good mix between natural landscapes and tourist attractions. You really feel like you’re in the Black Forest in Triberg.

If you’d like to stay in this general area but would prefer a different town, check out Gengenbach. It’s a lovely small town with a delightful market square and cute side streets. From Gengenbach you can easily head into the Black Forest – be sure to stop by the Black Forest Open Air Museum and see what life on a Black Forest farm used to be like. We loved it!

Freiburg

Freiburg im Breisgau

If you’re looking for a pleasant stay in the Black Forest, consider Freiburg. It’s our favorite home base! I lived here for a little while when I was in grad school and am always happy to spend time in Freiburg.

Freiburg is in the heart of the Black Forest and is aptly known as the “capital of the Black Forest.” It’s also the sunniest spot in Germany.

A vibrant university town, Freiburg features a mixture of Gothic and modern architecture, as seen in the Old Town. One of the most popular attractions in Freiburg is the Münster Cathedral. This impressive Gothic structure dates back to 1200 AD and boasts one of Germany’s largest church bells. Another must-see is Schlossberg, a scenic lookout offering sweeping views of the city’s iconic red-tiled rooftops.

One of the reasons we love making Freiburg our Black Forest home base is that not only is there a lot to see and do in Freiburg, it’s easy to visit locations all over the region by train and car. For our recommendations on where to stay and to read more about all there is to do and see in this beautiful town, read our Freiburg guide here.

Basel

Basel is conveniently located near the borders of Germany, Switzerland, and France. It’s only about an hour by train or car from Freiburg, so it’s a great day trip if you just want to get a quick taste of Switzerland. You could also make a short stop in Basel before heading further into Switzerland.

Nestled on the banks of the Rhine River, Basel is a quaint riverside city with lots to offer. Some of the city’s most important landmarks include the Basel Minster, the medieval streets of the Old Town, the Zoo Basel, Kunstmuseum Basel, and Marktplatz.

Zurich

Continuing your journey into Switzerland, only an hour away from Basel is Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city. The city is an important global hub for banking and finance, but it’s also rich with history and beautiful architecture.

This is best seen in the picturesque streets of the central Altstadt where you’ll also find famous historic landmarks like Lindenhof, Grossmünster, Kunsthaus Zürich, and Fraumünster. After sightseeing, you can spend the rest of the day strolling along the calm promenade of Lake Zurich, admiring the scenic surroundings, and trying out delicious Swiss chocolate.

Zurich also has a good airport to fly in and out of. We flew from the US to Zurich once when we spent a couple weeks in the Swiss Alps and it was super convenient. If you fly home from Zurich it’s easy to spend a day there before heading home.

Lucerne, Interlaken & Swiss Alps

The Swiss Alps are a highlight of any Switzerland trip and we recommend taking 3-5 days to do this leg of the journey.

From Zurich, first make your way to Lucerne, which is around an hour drive away. Lucerne is worth spending at least a full day in. It’s home to famous landmarks such as the Chapel Bridge (the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe), the colorful Old Town, and the Swiss Museum of Transport.

Lucerne is also surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes like Lake Lucerne and Mount Pilatus, a mountain peak with a restaurant and sweeping alpine views that’s reached by cable cars or railway.

After Lucerne, your final destination could be the Interlaken area, arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world. The fastest way to get to Interlaken is by car which is around an hour away. But if you’re looking for a unique experience, then you can opt for a scenic train ride on the Luzern-Interlaken Express.

Interlaken is an important destination in the Bernese Oberland region of the SwissAlps and is considered to be the main gateway to the breathtaking landscapes of this region. The town is situated between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. A great way to explore is by taking a boat cruise. Interlaken is also surrounded by mountains, the most famous peaks being Jungfrau (known as the Top of Europe), Eiger, and Mönch.

You could also choose a small village to base yourself in and then explore the area by car. We did that once and loved the experience of being in a tiny alpine village, as well as driving through the Alps and visiting places like St. Moritz, Davos, Lugano, Grindelwald, Gimmelwald, Wintertur, St. Gallen, and more. We even stopped in a tiny village that we think Aaron’s family is originally from!

Starting Point #3: Lake Constance (Bodensee)

Lake Constance might be more of an unknown hidden gem for tourists coming from outside Germany, but it’s a favorite for locals and also a good starting point to travel to Switzerland from Germany.

Lake Constance

Konstanz

Konstanz is the biggest city on the shores of Lake Constance. It’s a great starting point for this region since there’s many a lot of different things to see and do. You can start by exploring Niederburg, the well-preserved medieval Old Town district and home to the city’s main church, Konstanz Munster.

Don’t miss a boat trip to Mainau Island, also known as the Island of Flowers, where you can immerse yourself in stunning botanical gardens and explore the Baroque Mainau Castle. For those looking for a relaxing treat, make sure to check out the Bodensee-Therme Konstanz, a thermal spa right on the shore of the lake.

If you happen to be in Konstanz for New Year’s you’re in for a treat. We celebrated here once and had so much fun welcoming the new year with everyone else in the Old Town and on the shores of the lake.

Meersburg

Meersburg is a small town near Konstanz, around 40 minutes away by car and ferry. It’s surrounded by vineyards on the northern banks of Lake Constance, so it’s perfect for vineyard tours and wine tastings.

It’s also known for its medieval charm. The Old Town is home to two medieval castles: the Meersburg Castle (considered to be one of the oldest inhabited castles in Germany) and Neues Schloss Meersburg, which houses several museums. Meersburg also boasts of an expanse of half-timbered houses, and two medieval town gates, which are remnants of the ancient town fortification.

Black Forest flowers

Lindau

Lindau is another well-known summer destination in the Lake Constance area. It’s around an hour drive south from Meersburg. It’s also quite near the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen and Thurgau and the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, so you can easily cross to the other two countries from here.

The best time to visit Lindau is in the spring or summer months because the gardens and outdoor spaces are in full bloom. So if you’re visiting during these seasons, we recommend staying for a few days and enjoying the scenery and even participating in outdoor activities like sailing, hiking, swimming, and cycling.

The Old Town and Lindau Harbor are other two places worth visiting. The harbor has amazing views of the lake and the surrounding Swiss and Austrian Alps. It’s also where you can find interesting sites like the Lindau Lighthouse and Bavarian Lion sculpture.

Bregenz

An hour away south from Lindau is Bregenz. This city is the capital of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg and lies on the east and southeast shores of Lake Constance. It’s surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes like the Pfänder mountain and the Rhine valley leading to the German Alpine foothills.

One of the highlights of the city is the Bregenz Festival (Bregenzer Festspiele). This performing arts festival is held annually in the summer around July to August. It’s a unique festival because of the venue – a floating stage is set up on the lake to showcase spectacular opera and musical performances. Aside from the festival, the Old Town features a lot of Gothic and Baroque architecture. Some important landmarks include the Martinsturm, a medieval tower with great city views, and the Kunsthaus Bregenz.

St. Gallen

To make your way to Switzerland, all you have to do is drive a little over 30 minutes to the west to St. Gallen. This Swiss city has a rich history being founded in the 7th century and it has now evolved into a large urban center in Eastern Switzerland.

The main highlight of St. Gallen is the Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage site built sometime in the 8th century. The abbey complex includes a magnificent Baroque-style cathedral, a library with ancient manuscripts and rare books, and a picturesque courtyard. In the city center, you’ll also find Drei Weieren, a collection of ponds that now serves as a natural swimming area with a magnificent view over the historic city. It’s a popular local recreation area for the city inhabitants to swim and picnic in during summer and even ice skate during the colder winter months.

Zurich

Your last stop in this itinerary would be Zurich. Depending on how much time you have, you can either make this into a day trip or stay for a couple of days. If you have the time, you could also venture further into Lucerne and Interlaken, as discussed in the previous section, or head north to the Black Forest or France.

Hallstatt

Germany, Austria & Switzerland in One Trip

The above proposed itineraries combine Germany with either Austria or Switzerland. But what if you do want to see Germany, Austria, and Switzerland all in one trip?

The good news is that it’s possible! That said, it’s important you plan every leg of your trip in advance. You should decide how much time to spend in each city/town, find accommodation as needed, and calculate how much time you’ll be traveling in between each destination. It’ll be rewarding and you’ll be sure to make travel memories you’ll never forget!

To see all 3 countries in one trip we suggest starting in Bavaria (consider flying into Munich) like we discussed in the first section. From Munich, you can add day trips to Neuschwanstein and/or Garmisch. Then, head to Berchtesgaden and then into Austria by going to Salzburg first and then Innsbruck.

From there you head could go to Zurich, Switzerland. You could also alternatively stop in the Gimmelwald area to explore the Alps or head to Lucerne instead. Depending on how much time you want to spend in Switzerland, we also recommend going down to Lugano to experience Italian-speaking Switzerland or Geneva for the French-speaking area.

The last part of your trip would be to make your way back to Germany. This time you’ll head into the Black Forest region which is near the Swiss border. Choosing which towns or cities to stop by all ultimately depends on your time and personal preference! Make sure to read our complete Black Forest guide to help you choose the best things to do and see in the region.

Traveling Around Germany: Train or Car?

What’s the best way to get around Germany – train or car? This is one of our most frequently asked questions.

Both are great options so it really just depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. So before we get to driving route suggestions, let’s go over some pros and cons for both options to help you decide which one will work best for you.

Train Travel in Germany: Pros and Cons

Here are the pros of taking the train:

  • Train travel in Germany is pretty straight-forward, comfortable, and fast.
  • On the train you can enjoy scenic views without worrying about navigating or driving.
  • Many cities are well connected to different destinations and with train stations mostly being in the city center, it’s easy to get from one point to another.
  • In terms of prices, if you book tickets in advance, it’s possible to get amazing deals. Plus you can save money on discounts for kids, seniors, regional travel, and group travel.
  • Use the Deutsche Bahn website for train travel research and booking tickets. I like to do my research and booking on my laptop and then pull up the tickets in the DB Navigator app on my phone.

Here are some train travel cons:

  • You’ll need to do a lot of research to find the right trains for your travel needs. Then you have to book each train individually (unless you buy a more expensive German Rail Pass).
  • Seat reservations cost extra.
  • Trains can be crowded or even sold out during major events, holidays, and on weekends on popular routes. While you can still get on trains, even when there are no seats left, you might have to stand in the corridor.
  • If you buy the less expensive, train specific, non-refundable tickets and you miss your train you lose what you spent on those tickets and will have to buy much more expensive full price tickets.
  • German trains aren’t as amazingly punctual and reliable as they used to be.
  • Even though trains reach places in Germany, some smaller towns and off the beaten track areas aren’t easily accessible by train or need various transfers, making the trip quite time consuming.

Driving in Germany: Pros and Cons

Here are the pros of renting a car:

  • The biggest advantage of driving is flexibility! You get to decide when to leave, what route to take, and where you’d like to stop.
  • You have the ultimate freedom to see so much more of Germany and really fine tune your itinerary to your preferences.
  • Not to mention that some towns and regions are much more accessible by car.
  • In terms of costs, sometimes it costs less than taking the train, especially if you’re traveling with more people.
  • You get the experience of driving on the German Autobahn!
  • You can get off the beaten path more easily than when taking the train.

Here are some rental car and driving cons:

  • You have to take into account that someone has to be driving and navigating at all times, which can get tiring after long periods of time.
  • There are additional costs to consider like gas, parking (even in hotels), extra insurance (if you decide to get it), and possibly even a parking or traffic ticket.
  • There’s also the likelihood of getting stuck in traffic and losing time on the Autobahn and in busy cities.
  • Parking spaces are tighter than in places like the US, which can make parking more challenging.
  • You might feel nervous about driving in Germany. If that’s the case, we highly recommend this excellent Germany driving tutorial!

Renting A Car In Germany

Renting a car in Germany is an easy process. You can reserve a car online or at car rental agencies located at major airports, train stations, and cities.

We use Discover Cars to find the best rental cars, and if you can plan ahead you can find great prices. Our advice is to stick with major car companies like Hertz, Europcar, Alamo, Enterprise, Avis and the like. We’ve had good to great experiences every time.

Driving in Germany

If you’re set on doing a road trip through Germany, the first thing you should take into account is familiarizing yourself with some of the general rules of the road, traffic laws, and driving conditions.

Driving in Europe can be a very different experience from what you might be used to back at home, so the best way to prepare yourself is to do some research with the rules in Germany. We highly recommend using Tripiamo’s fantastic driving tutorial. It’ll only take you about an hour and you’ll feel comfortable driving all over Germany from day 1!

One of the most essential things you can read up on are the various road signs in Germany and their meanings. To give you an idea, there are over 1,000 different signs in the official German traffic code and it ranges from warning signs, regulation signs, guide signs, and other supplemental signs.

Most are pretty universal so you won’t have any difficulty understanding them, but of course there are more specific ones that you should at least be aware of. Tripiamo’s Germany driving tutorial covers the most important ones.

While you don’t need to memorize all of this information before hitting the road, it helps to have someone with you who can have easy access to road signs on their phone and is willing to help you identify any unfamiliar signs. This is also especially true for navigating directions, even if you have Google Maps or other GPS apps.

Since you’ll most likely be renting a car, there are also some things you have to keep in mind. In Germany, manual (stick shift) cars are much more common than automatic cars. If you’re not used to or not comfortable with driving stick shift you can rent an automatic for a slightly higher cost. You’ll need to specifically request an automatic when reserving your car.

rest area

While some people in Germany do drive large cars like SUVs or vans, smaller and more compact cars are a much more common option for rental cars. This might also be somewhat of an adjustment if you are used to driving larger cars back home. But actually, smaller cars will prove to be more helpful for parking in small spaces and driving through narrow streets.

Speaking of roads, be prepared to encounter all different types of roads in Germany. The Autobahn is, of course, Germany’s famous high-speed highway system. It connects different regions and cities all across the county. Some sections don’t have speed limits, but this doesn’t apply to every part. Look out for sections that have posted speed limits or construction zones with reduced speeds.

In cities, you’ll mostly be driving through busy streets with traffic, pedestrians, bikes, busses, and even street cars so it’s important to be mindful of crosswalks and traffic signals. Meanwhile, in smaller villages and towns, the streets can be much narrower and winding, so be extra cautious with navigating turns or finding parking.

While driving in Germany might be an adjustment in the beginning, we are certain that it won’t feel like this the entire time! Once you get a hang of it, you’ll be ready to enjoy the full road trip experience in Germany.

Best Scenic Germany Road Trips

Romantic Road

The Romantic Road is one of Germany’s most popular tourist routes. Because of this, it’s one of the easiest to navigate and follow since there are several signposts along the route. This “Romantic Route” starts in the city of Würzburg and ends in the small Bavarian town of Füssen.

If you plan to fly into Frankfurt and pick up your rental car at Frankfurt International Airport or a location elsewhere in the city, you could immediately drive to Würzburg, drive the route to Füssen, and then return the car in Munich.

This route stretches over 400 kilometers or almost 250 miles and passes through almost 30 official stops, including charming small towns, medieval castles, and beautiful scenery. The road trip can be done in either direction — Würzburg to Füssen or Füssen to Würtzburg. It can take anywhere from 1 to 5 days, depending on how much of the route you choose to see and how many stops you’d like to make along the way.

One of the main highlights of this route is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany. Rothenburg is straight out of a fairy tale with its cobblestone streets, colorful half-timbered houses, and historic city walls.

Other picturesque towns that are not as well known but are worth stopping by are Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen. These are neighboring towns to Rothenburg but are often not as touristy or crowded.

The final stop on the Romantic Road is Füssen, a small town in the Alps near the border of Austria and two dreamy castles. The most famous is Neuschwanstein Castle. One of King Ludwig’s fairy-tale castles, this is a beautiful place to visit year-round.If you don’t mind the cold, it’s especially breathtaking during the snowy winter months.

Fun fact: it’s said that Neuschwanstein castle was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s castles. The other, lesser known castle where King Ludwig spent some of his childhood is Hohenschwangau, which is located a short walk from Neuschwanstein.

Overall, the Romantic Road is one of the best scenic drives to discover the beauty of southern Germany.

Black Forest Route

Driving the Black Forest is another quintessential German road trip. This region is located in southwestern Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It’s associated with many different things like the delicious Black Forest cake, the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, thermal baths, cuckoo clocks, and beautiful forests, which makes it the perfect place for those interested in culture, history, and natural landscapes.

The most popular route to take is the Black Forest High Road. This scenic route extends for over 230 kilometers (145 miles) and runs from Baden-Baden in the north to Freudenstadt in the south. It can be done in a weekend or even one day, depending on how much time you spend at each stop.

Black Forest gardens and hillside

The route passes through several quaint villages, each worth visiting for different reasons. The first few stops, Baden-Baden and Bad Wildbad, are known for their thermal baths and natural hot springs.

Freiburg im Breisgau, a bustling university town considered the Capital of the Black Forest, is known for its charming city center with mixture of Gothic and modern architecture.

Triburg and Lake Titisee, are all great places for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hikes with panoramic views, water activities like swimming and boating or traditional cuckoo clocks.

There’s a lot to see and do in the Black Forest! For more information on the best things to do and see, read our full Black Forest guide.

Lake Constance

Bodensee (Lake Constance)

The best part about a road trip around Lake Constance (Bodensee in German) in southern Germany is that you actually get to discover three countries at once! That’s because Lake Constance shares a border with Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The area surrounding the lake is not only full of beautiful places to stop and explore but there are also tons of different activities you can do, depending on which part of the lake you go to. On the German side, you can discover Konstanz, a university town right on the lake, picturesque villages like Meersburg, resort towns like Lindau, small islands like Meinau, and even camping areas for motorhomes.

On the Austrian and Swiss sides you’ll find amazing views of and from surrounding the nearby rolling hills heading into the Alps. You can also take an excursion to Zurich or head south to tiny Lichtenstein.

Aside from the gorgeous scenery, Lake Constance is a popular destination for families during summer when water sports and activities like sailing, windsurfing, and swimming are in full swing.

Fairy Tale Route

The Fairy Tale Route is a classic road trip option highlighting the magical world of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. It starts in central Germany in the city of Hanau and goes all the way north to Bremen for a total of around 600 kilometers (370 miles).

Along the way, you’ll drive by fairytale castles and historically significant towns associated with the Brothers Grimm and their stories.

Some important towns worth seeing include Asfeld, which is home to the House of Little Red Riding Hood and Bad Wildungen, where visitors can find the Snow White Museum.

Another town to visit is Marburg, known as a place where the Brothers Grimm studied. The Old Town is sure to take you back to medieval times with its picturesque half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets.

Other cities further up north include Kassel, where there’s a whole museum dedicated to the fairy tales which houses the first edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales from 1812. There’s also the town of Hameln, best known for the tale of the Pied Piper.

Another thing you can’t miss are the castles. In this route, you’ll get to admire the Sababurg Castle, which is widely referred to as the Sleeping Beauty Castle. Another iconic one is the Trendelenburg Fortress, known as the beloved Rapunzel Tower. This road trip is a must-see for anyone looking to experience the real magic of Germany!

Alpine lake (Hintersee)

German Alpine Road

The German Alpine road is one of oldest and most scenic routes, offering breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps.

The starting points are either the town of Lindau near Lake Constance or Lake Königssee near Berchtesgaden. The route extends for 515 kilometers (around 320 miles) and snakes through alpine meadows, relaxing spa resorts, mountain lakes, historic castles, and quaint southern German towns.

Starting in Lindau, you’ll get to discover the beauty of the Allgäu region which is known for its crystal clear alpine lakes, lush meadows, and snow-capped mountain peaks. The next stop would naturally be Füssen which is home to the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau.

As you go further east, you’ll reach Oberammergau and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region. One of the highlights of this part of the journey is Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany. To reach the summit, you have to take a cable car to get spectacular views of glaciers and the German Alps. It’s a fantastic winter destination for those who love snow sports like skiing and snowboarding.

Last but not least, the alpine roads will lead you to Berchtesgaden. You can easily spend a day here filled with sightseeing and activities – from exploring the Berchtesgaden National Park, climbing the Eagle’s Nest, or a fun guided tour of the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines. If you want to extend your road trip, you can even make your way to Salzburg, Austria since it’s only a 45-minute drive away.

German Wine Route

The German Wine Route takes visitors through the scenic Rhineland-Palatinate region. This route is on the shorter side at only 85 kilometers (just over 50 miles) and showcases some of the country’s best wineries and vineyards, culinary spots, natural scenes, and hiking trails.

One of the highlights of the German Wine Route is its unique climate. It’s known to have a mild, temperate climate that’s unique compared to the rest of the country. Because of this, the region thrives with crops like kiwis, lemons, and figs. Spring is especially a great time of year to visit since the route comes alive with blossoming almond trees.

On the south end, the route starts in the town of Schweigen-Rechtenbach, located on the French border. This route is filled with hidden gems of towns like Bad Bergzabern, Bad Dürkheim, and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. Make sure to stop by any of the various wineries and tasting rooms along the way to sample the best wines the region has to offer.

The best time to visit would be any time from March to October. During this period, many open-air wine wine festivals are held along the route. The most famous one is Wurstmarkt in Bad Dürkheim. It’s the biggest wine festival worldwide, with over 600,000 visitors each year.

Rhine River And Mosel Valley

The Rhine River and Mosel Valley area is not only another great option for wine lovers but it’s also one of the most picturesque regions in Germany.

The best place to start this route is the city of Koblenz, since it’s a point where the Rhine river and Mosel river meet. There are different variations to the route but a good end point would be Trier, a city further south near the Luxembourg border.

One of the first stops you can make is the town of Cochem. This romantic city is known for the famous Reichsburg Castle (Cochem Castle), which towers over the Mosel River. The medieval castle has been rebuilt many times over the year and it hosts fun themed activities like medieval-style dinner and live performances.

Before heading to Cochem, it’s definitely worth taking a slight detour to Burg Eltz, another castle along the valley and overlooking the Elzbach River. This rare castle has never been damaged by war or other external force and hasbeen under ownership of the same family for over 30 generations. If you make your way.

Another picturesque town worth visiting is Bacharach, a popular stop for river cruises that’s filled with wineries and vineyards. It’s also home to Burg Stahleck, a castle turned into a youth hostel on a hill, which you can visit even if you’re not staying there!. If you’re interested in booking a room in that castle (or another German castle), check out our guide to the best castle hotels in Germany.

Towards the end of the route, we recommend stopping at Traben Trarbach, a former major wine trading center in Europe. There’s no better place to enjoy a glass of Riesling than in the famous underground wine cellars and vaults of the city.

And for the final stop in this road trip, head on to the town of Trier. It’s known for its amazingly preserved Roman structures and ruins, like the impressive Porta Nigra city gate.

Saxon Switzerland

Saxon Switzerland

Saxon Switzerland is one of our favorite hidden gems of Germany and definitely a worthy addition to your Germany road trip itinerary.

This area is one of Germany’s 16 national parks, boasting of 710 square kilometers (274 square miles) of pure natural beauty including everything from dense woodlands, tall mountains, deep canyons, and gorges.

Saxon Switzerland is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who love rock climbing, biking, and hiking. The park has a marked network of over 400 kilometers (250 miles) of hiking trails which visitors must strictly stick within.

The highlight of this region is the iconic Bastei Bridge. It’s made up of stunningly bizarre rock formations that stand over 600 feet over the Elbe river. There is a bridge that links several of the rocks, so visitors can walk over it and get the best views of the national park. You can also get amazing views in the Königstein Fortress, one of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe.

The Saxon Switzerland region is also home to a number of quaint villages and towns, such as Bad Schandau and Kurort Rathen, where you can take a break from hiking and try out the local food or go for a dip in the thermal baths.

It’s easily accessible thanks to the Rügen Bridge, an enormous bridge connecting the island to the Hanseatic city of Stralsund in Northern Germany.

The most well known sight is the Jasmund National Park. This national park is home to stunning white chalk cliffs with views to the Baltic Sea. For the best views, make sure to climb the Königsstuhl.
