Got an early flight out of Frankfurt am Main?

Arriving in Frankfurt after a long flight and want to explore the city before continuing to your next destination?

Don’t want to miss your expensive train reservation due to an unexpected flight delay or drive your rental car while jet-lagged?

Consider spending the night in a hotel right near Frankfurt International Airport!

Frankfurt skyline

Frankfurt is a relatively compact city that’s well-connected to Frankfurt International Airport via public transportation. By staying near the airport for a night or two, you can easily head to downtown Frankfurt and see all the famous landmarks like the Frankfurt Cathedral, Goethe House, or the Main River without worrying about missing your flight, train or rental car pick-up the next morning.

With Frankfurt Airport being one of the most important airports in the world, it’s no surprise that there are a variety of accommodations in its proximity. From luxury hotels, business hotels, and budget-friendly options, you’ll find the perfect place to lay your head in our list of the best hotels near Frankfurt Airport.

Why Stay Near Frankfurt International Airport (FRA)?

Staying near the Frankfurt Airport is ideal for those who only need to spend one or two nights and want to be close to both the city and the airport. You’ll have the comfort of knowing you’re conveniently close to the airport, but you’ll also be able to easily head into the city if you’d like.

It’s a no-brainer to stay near the airport if your flight arrives in Frankfurt late at night. Instead of trying to figure out how to get into the city and walking around a new city in the dark with your luggage, you can simply head to a hotel close to airport for much needed rest.

Staying near the airport is also a great location if you have an early flight to catch the next morning. You can spend the day or just an evening in Frankfurt city center, return to your hotel for a good night’s sleep, and then make your way to your morning flight refreshed, relaxed, and stress-free.

Choosing a hotel near Frankfurt airport is also a great option if your international flight arrives in Germany in the morning or during the day. You’re likely to be exhausted from travel and jet-lagged from changing so many time zones. And then there’s always the concern that you’ll miss the expensive train, bus or car rental pick-up time you booked if your flight is unexpectedly delayed (it’s happened to us and it’s frustrating).

So why not make things easy on yourself and spend your first night near Frankfurt airport!

That way, if your flight is on time, you can drop your luggage at the hotel and head into the city to see the sights and enjoy good food.

If your flight is delayed, you won’t miss an important train, bus or rental car pick-up and lose time and money.

And no matter what, you’ll get a good night sleep and start your trip on the right foot.

How Far Is Frankfurt Airport from the City?

The distance between the and Frankfurt city center is 13 km or approximately 8 miles. It’s around a 15-minute drive by car or 20 to 30 minutes depending on what public transportation you take.

I’ve gone to and from Frankfurt airport and city many times and it’s quick and easy – quicker and easier than in many other cities!

How Can I Get to Frankfurt City from the Airport?

There are a couple ways of getting to central Frankfurt from the airport using public transportation. But you can also take a taxi or book a car rental if you prefer.

By Bus

There are several bus lines which can take you to the center: 61, 77, 72, 58 and 62 bus lines (daytime buses) and 81 and 7 bus lines (night buses).

By Train

S-Bahn (regional trains): Take the S-Bahn railway S6 and S9 lines to Offenbach Ost and Hanau. Then you’ll be able to transfer to downtown Frankfurt (Hauptwache Station).

U-Bahn (metro): You can take U-Bahn 8 and 9 lines, which will take you to Hauptwache Station.

What To Consider When Staying Near Frankfurt Airport

  1. Location. When choosing an airport hotel near Frankfurt International Airport, you have plenty of options. There are several hotels that are directly connected to a terminal building via a walkway, meaning you won’t have to leave the hotel to go to the airport. There’s even a hotel that’s inside the transit area of the airport! If you don’t mind being a short distance from the airport, you’ll find hotels within the vicinity of the airport that’s easily reachable by walking or a taxi.
  2. Airport shuttle services. If you don’t want to worry about public transportation or booking a taxi, airport shuttle services solve this problem. Most airport hotels that are not directly connected to the airport and are a few minutes away offer airport shuttles. Many might have an additional service fee but you can definitely find many that are free for guests to use. Make sure to ask and check the schedule, how frequent they run, and if they operate 24/7.
  3. Rooms with A/C. Summers in Germany can at times be hot and humid. Not all hotels in Germany have A/C, so if this is important to you, be sure to specifically look for it before booking. If you’re not traveling in the height of summer, not having A/C isn’t usually an issue. Note: if you don’t have A/C in your hotel, you’ll likely be able to open the windows, but it may be noisy since you are near the airport.
  4. Breakfast. Most hotels offer free or paid breakfast (sometimes whether or not you get a free breakfast depends on the type of room you book). Many hotels offer a full German breakfast buffet, while others are simpler (bread, Brötchen, cold cuts, jam, coffee, tea). American chain hotels may offer an American-style breakfast (eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc.).
  5. Free Wi-Fi. Most hotels will offer free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel but it’s a good idea to check on that if having free Wi-Fi is important to you.
  6. Amenities. Hotels may offer facilities such as a gym, sauna, indoor pool, on-site restaurants and bars, or services like valet parking, a concierge or laundry service. Some even offer babysitting services! Many hotels offer the option to pay at the hotel and fully refundable rooms – sometimes at a slightly higher price than pre-pay or non-refundable rooms.

Where Is Frankfurt Am Main?

Frankfurt am Main is a central German city on the river Main located in the state of Hesse. It’s the biggest city nearest Frankfurt International Airport.

Are There 2 Frankfurts in Germany?

Yes! There are 2 Frankfurts: Frankfurt am Main and Frankfurt an der Oder. They are differentiated by the river they’re on.

The official name of the Frankfurt near the big international airport is “Frankfurt am Main.” “Main” is the name of the river that flows through the city, so Frankfurt am Main means Frankfurt on the Main river.

So “Frankfurt an der Oder” means Frankfurt on the Oder river and is located in Eastern Germany.

Is Frankfurt Worth Visiting?

Yes, it certainly can be! If you’re transiting through Frankfurt, staying in the city for a full day or even half a day is worth it to see some of the city’s famous tourist destinations! The city is pretty compact so you can see a lot just using public transport.

Just within the Old Town area, you’ll be able to see Römerberg, the central main square with the famous town hall Römer. Other important landmarks like the Frankfurt Cathedral, St. Paul’s Church, and Goethe House are within walking distance. Check out our guide on how to plan the ultimate 1 day itinerary in Frankfurt here.

After years of simply transiting through Frankfurt and only spending a day or two in the city I decided to spend several days there a few years ago while in Europe to work with a client.

I rented an apartment in a neighborhood outside of the city center and got to know this city by simply exploring by foot and public transport. It’s a beautiful city and I really enjoyed my time getting to know Frankfurt as a temporary local!

Should I Stay In Frankfurt Or Near The Airport?

Both are good options. It all depends on your itinerary and duration of your stay.

If you are only staying in Frankfurt overnight and have a very early morning flight the next day, then we suggest booking a hotel near the airport for convenience. That way you’ll be able to save time and go sightseeing without the worries of waking up extra early, getting to the airport, or missing your flight. Check out our guide of the best hotels near Frankfurt airport here.

If you aren’t constrained by time or are traveling by train, then staying in the city center near the central train station and downtown is the best choice. You have plenty of hotels to choose from that are within walking distance of all the city’s top landmarks.

What To Look For In A Hotel

  1. Central location in the Old Town area. The Old Town area is a great location because it’s home to the city’s most important landmarks like Römerberg, the town hall Römer, Frankfurt Cathedral, Goethe House, Paulskirche, and many more.
  2. Number and size of beds. You’re likely to have the option to book a variety of bed types – e.g., king (which might be 1 mattress or 2 twins on one king-sized frame – often with 2 duvets), a queen, or 1 or more twins. Sometimes a single room will have a queen or a twin. Not all of these will be available at every hotel, though, so be sure to check what type of beds they offer.
  3. Rooms with en suite full baths. Most hotels offer full en suite bathrooms, some with a bathtub, some with a bathtub and shower combo, others will just have a shower. Some hotels in Germany – usually smaller boutique hotels or budget hotels – will offer rooms with a shared hall bathroom. The hotels in this list have full en suite bathrooms.
  4. Rooms with A/C. Summers in Germany can at times be hot and humid. Not all hotels in Germany have A/C, so if this is important to you, be sure to specifically look for it before booking. Note: if you don’t have A/C in your hotel, you’ll likely be able to open the windows (though you’re not likely to have a screened-in window).
  5. Breakfast. Most hotels offer free or paid breakfast (sometimes whether or not you get a free breakfast depends on the type of room you book). Many hotels offer a full German breakfast buffet, while others are simpler (bread, Brötchen, cold cuts, jam, coffee, tea). American chain hotels may offer an American-style breakfast (eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc).
  6. An elevator. While you’re likely to find an elevator in large, modern hotels with high floors, stairs might be the only option at older, boutique or smaller hotels. If you don’t mind carrying your luggage up a few flights of stairs, these non-elevator hotels are often quite charming. But if an elevator is important to you, look for larger, modern, or chain hotels.
  7. Parking. Some city center hotels will offer on-site parking for a daily fee. If there’s no on-site parking, you can likely find a nearby public parking area or on-street parking.
  8. Free wifi. Most hotels will offer free wifi throughout the hotel but it’s a good idea to check on that if having free wifi is important to you.
  10. Good value. Staying in a popular part of the city will typically cost more than staying further out but you’ll be able to easily walk to many sites and you’ll be close to public transportation. So you’ll not only have more flexibility during the day, you’ll also save time and stress by not having to “commute” to the city center each day.

Where is the Black Forest?

The Black Forest is located in southwest Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg. To the north is the Rhine Valley region and to the east is the state of Bavaria. It also shares a border with France to the west and Switzerland to the south, making it the best place to travel to three different countries in just a couple of days.

Cities and Towns to Stay in the Black Forest

If you’re planning to explore the Black Forest area, choosing a city or town as your home base can be the best way to make the most of your trip. This lets you have a clear starting point for your adventure and a good place to return to after a long day of exploring. Not having to pack and unpack, check in and out, and find your way around a new location every day saves you time and stress.

Many of the towns in the region have excellent public transport connections or are just a short drive away from one another and other nearby popular attractions.

This makes it easier to get around and allows you to be more flexible with your schedule, so you can take your time and see all the sights at your own pace. By choosing a location (or even two) as your base, you can easily access a wide range of activities and attractions, ensuring that you make the most of your time in the Black Forest.

The Black Forest region is made up of tons of small towns. Any would make an ideal base for your journey, depending on what you’re looking for. All of the little towns in this beautiful region are warm and welcoming but are also distinct from one another.

Quick Answer: Best Hotels in the Black Forest

1). Freiburg im Breisgau

Freiburg im Breisgau is known as the Capital of the Black Forest. It’s a vibrant university town, home to the famous University of Freiburg (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität), that is also known for its Gothic and modern architecture as seen in the Old Town’s picturesque streets. It’s the ideal spot to stay for a couple of days if you’re looking for a livelier atmosphere that also has a historic feel. Some important landmarks include the Freiburg Cathedral and Schlossberg, an outlook with panoramic views of Freiburg’s red-tiled roofs.

Best Hotels:

2). Triberg

Another great place to stay is Triberg. Triberg is a smaller town that’s closely associated with the famous Black Forest cuckoo clocks. In fact, you can find the world’s biggest cuckoo clock here!

Triberg does lean towards being touristy but it’s also home to the Triberg Waterfalls, a series of waterfalls near the Gutach river and considered to be one of Germany’s highest waterfalls. It’s really fun to hike to these waterfalls and an easy way to work a Black Forest hike into your itinerary. If you’re looking to stay somewhere that has a good mix between natural landscapes and tourist attractions, then you’ll have a great time in Triberg.

Best Hotels:

3). Bad Wildbad

Bad Wildbad is another beautiful, idyllic town in the northern Black Forest. Like Baden-Baden, this town is known for its thermal baths and spa resorts. Some of the most popular ones include Vital Therme and Palais Thermal, both of which are great options to pamper yourself. Bad Wildbad is also home to the  Sommerbergbahn, a funicular railway that goes up to a plateau with breathtaking views of the Black Forest. From there you can walk to two of Bad Wildbad’s most popular attractions – the Treetop Walk & Observation Tower and the Wildline Suspension Bridge.

Best Hotels:

4.) Baden-Baden

The spa town of Baden-Baden in the north of the Black Forest is perfect for those looking to enjoy a wide array of activities while also having the option to wind down and relax after sightseeing. This town is famous for its natural hot springs, spa and wellness centers, and thermal baths. Aside from luxurious spas, Baden-Baden is also one of Germany’s top destinations for sports enthusiasts. You’ll find everything from hiking trails, golf courses, tennis courts, and equestrian clubs.  Two other very popular attractions are the Hohenbaden Castle and the Merkur Funicular Railway.

Best Hotels:

5). Gengenbach

Gengenbach is a quaint town on the western edge of the Black Forest. It has the classic, picturesque half-timbered houses in Old Town, which is always fun to explore. The Old Town also features the Gengenbach Town Hall which is known to be the world’s biggest advent calendar. The large windows of the building each represent a day in the countdown, and it looks magical during the Christmas season.

Gengenbach is also a 30-minute drive away from the Black Forest Open-Air Museum, where you can learn about the region’s cultural traditions and even try a slice of the iconic Black Forest cake. It’s easy to reach lots of places in the Black Forest from Gengenbach, as well as hop over the border into France.

Best Hotels:

6). Staufen im Breisgau

Staufen is a charming little town south of Freiburg known for its historic architecture, winding streets, and historic atmosphere. One of Staufen’s highlights is its beautiful castle, Schloss Staufenberg. This castle sits majestically atop a hill overlooking the town and offers amazing views of the Black Forest countryside. Visitors can hike up to admire the grounds and also stop by the castle restaurant which serves delicious regional traditional delicacies. The castle also offers winery tours where you can sample their local wines. It’s a great place to stay for food and wine lovers!

Where to Stay in Stuttgart

We recommend a centrally located hotel in Stuttgart Mitte because you’ll be within walking distance of so many things:

  • Main train station (Hauptbahnhof)
  • The Christmas market (and other seasonal events)
  • Shopping on Königstrasse
  • The New and Old Castle, Schlossplatz, churches, and the Markthalle
  • Christmas markets and other downtown festivals
  • Restaurants, cafes and bars
  • Museums and galleries
  • The University (Universität Stuttgart)
  • The Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour

If you stay downtown and want to visit sights outside of the city center like the TV Tower (excellent views!), Mercedes Museum, Porsche Museum, Grab Kapelle, city vineyards, the Seilbahn, Cannstatter Wasen or Killesberg tower, you can either take the Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour and/or public transportation.

Stuttgart is a walkable city that has excellent public transportation (bus, tram, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and train). You can also easily drive and park a rental car (for a fee), which means that no matter where you stay in or around Stuttgart, you’ll be able to get where you want to go without hassle.

We’ve used both public transportation and rental cars in Stuttgart with no problems. Many hotels offer onsite parking and there are many public parking lots.

What to Look for in a Hotel in Stuttgart

When looking for a place to stay in Stuttgart we recommend considering which of the factors below are most important to you.

  1. Central location in the Stuttgart Mitte downtown area. In Stuttgart, if you want to stay in the heart of the city, the best location is within walking distance of the Stuttgart central station. That way you’ll also be close proximity to public transportation and many of the city’s main landmarks like the New and Old Castle, Markthalle, Königstrasse, and many more. Our top 2 hotel picks – Hotel Unger and Motel One – are both super close to everything in city center.
  2. Number and size of beds. You’re likely to have the option to book a variety of bed types – e.g., king (which might be 1 mattress or 2 twins on one king-sized frame – often with 2 duvets), a queen, or 1 or more twins. Sometimes a single room will have a queen or a twin. Not all of these will be available every hotel, though, so be sure to check what type of beds they offer. Our #3 top pick – Maritim Stuttgart – has King-sized beds with 1 mattress.
We had a shower at Hotel Unger and Motel One and a spacious bathroom with a shower and bathtub at the Maritim Stuttgart.
All 3 of our top picks – Hotel Unger, Motel One and Maritim Stuttgart – have A/C in the rooms!
  5. The breakfast buffet at Hotel Unger was my favorite.
All 3 of our top picks – Hotel Unger, Motel One and Maritim Stuttgart – have elevators.
  7. Parking. Some city center hotels will offer on-site parking for a daily fee. If there’s no on-site parking, you can likely find a nearby public parking area or on-street parking.
  8. Free Wi-Fi. Most hotels will offer free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel but it’s a good idea to check on that if having free Wi-Fi is important to you. All 3 of our top picks – Hotel Unger, Motel One and Maritim Stuttgart – offer free Wi-Fi.
  9. Maritim Stuttgart had fabulous amenities!
  10. Good value. Staying in a popular part of the city will typically cost more than staying further out but you’ll be able to easily walk to many sites and you’ll be close to public transportation. So, you’ll not only have more flexibility during the day, you’ll also save time and stress by not having to “commute” to the city center each day. All 3 of our top picks – Hotel Unger, Motel One and Maritim Stuttgart – are excellent value for money.
